Nice triple beam balance rhoder, don't see many of those around any more!

I love your 'Canestrino' variety. Got some seeds from another awesome forum member who brought it back from Europe and did me a favor to trade, so I've just started them a couple of weeks ago for autumn. Thanks for the tips on picking them before they bruise. Did you notice if Canestrino is very susceptible to leaf mold if you have much of that where you're at, and whether the indeterminate plants behave or get unruly?

PupillaCharites, It always grows well for me with no problems. That could be due to my friend growing it and saving seeds for many years and having it acclimate to our micro-climate. It is grown in the part of Italy where he grew up and he says the climate is similar to what we have in N. CA. It is indeterminate and can grow huge and unruly. I also notice it is the first of my plants to stress and tank when it gets really hot here in September but my friend manages to keep his going. He is a very experienced tomato grower and I'm not. Canestrino has less leaf problems compared to the other types I grow. Very productive and usually produces the largest tomato in my garden but not this year, they are all on the small side. Hope it does well for you.

PC, if you don't have to transport the Canestrinos you should let them ripen on the vine, of course. I'm growing in a community garden and I always seem to drop or squish something as I transport my pickings home...

Hi rhoder, if I didn't say it before, let me agree with caryltoo, they really are gorgeous looking tomatoes. Thanks again for clearing up what you look for and the role of the community garden in it, there must be some folks in the garden eyeing your tomatoes with a bit of yearning LOL. Depending on the season, when we get into the summer season here tomatoes get hot and soft quickly on the vine so it is something I still need to carefully watch. Since it is autumn for these, though vine near table ripe could be a possibility :-) I'm looking forward to joining your Canestrino growers' club, if I can manage to raise the sprouts ok, I just lost one weak one but another is going strong!

PC, Will you post updates on your Canestrino grow? From a google search, my understanding is that there are 2 different tomatoes called Canestrino.

Holy moly -- 570 gr = 1.28 lbs And it almost looks like a pumpkin!

I use these for making tomato sauce, usually quite large with very few seeds. Most are around 1 lb although this year they are small probably due to the drought in my area. I haven't been giving my tomatoes much water. I did not see this one until it started turning color.
