Need creative decorating advice for our dining/kitchen area

I would love to get members feedback on how to decorate an awkward space in our dining/kitchen area. I have attached a picture which shows the area which is inset about 3' deep and 5' wide. You can see this area when you first enter our house and the previous owners had a curio cabinet here, however, I would like to do something different and would love to hear some creative design options. Since this is what you see when you first walk into our house I want to make it as eye catching as can be! Thanks!
