I love your window treatments, but I'd take off the decor on top, it takes away from the the rest of the treatment. Does the lace go down any furhter than it is? Personally, I think you have a good start but need some additions and a rearrangement of furniture. An area rug, art on the wall, a few additional pieces of furniture and some lamps.

Can you place the sofas perpendicular from the window facing one another, perhaps with coffee table between the sofas down the middle? Right now everything is railroaded against the wall. Agree you ought to let the lacey curtains hang to the floor. Since it looks like you are going for a Baroque look, how about a large rectangular mirror with a carved frame, gilded or antique painted finish to replace the eight light candle holder. The eight count candle holder doesn't have enough physical presence, so I think a mirror or large painting or series of framed pieces of artwork would look better. As an alternative on the same wall, a nice long table or, better, french Provincial style Credenza, again with a nice antique painted finish, will fill up the wall better. For the short term, move the sofas, and hang the candle holder about 18 inches lower and place the chair in the corner where that plant and photo,on the left, now sit.
Two more photos, giving us a view of the other two walls would help us get a better idea of the geography of the room.
That strand of fake floral/ivy across the window needs to go... makes me sneeze looking at it.

Thanks for the comments! The lace does come to the floor. Across from the window is the couch with a striped wall paper in the same colors as the furniture, which also has shades of green too. What color rug would you suggest?

If the glass table stays for now, I'd cover it with something soft a femanine. Perhaps a green check table cloth that coordinates that match the pillows? Or morlace?

Based on what you already have, I think you're looking for a romantic style vs French Country.

Since, you need to stick with what you have in terms of furniture, I would consider framing out the mirror with wood trim and painting it a distressed cream. Change out the lampshade for something more ornate like this bell shade http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Bartolo_Table_Lamp/270/

I would also consider painting out the metal pieces in the room with a mercury glass paint or a cream to lighten things a bit. Bring the candle labres down on the wall they are hung too high. I would still suggest you loose the swags as well as the ivy. Down the road consider changing the upholstery on the arm chair to create more interest.

Amazon, overstock or Bed Bath and beyond. Also in this economy it might be just a little more expensive to have a custom slipcover made that zips or Velcro's open down the back for easy removal and cleaning and a much better fit.

Ok. French Country is out. The slipcovers have been returned so I'm going to work with what I have. I've pulled the furniture from the walls and placed the love seat in front of the window. I will be taking down all wall hangings too. I would like to frame the mirror too. Any comments or suggestions? I would also like to get a rug. What size and color. Do I take down the wall paper which is a dark taupe background with strips the same colors as the furniture? What paint color? I also need to add more pieces, but what?

I think your walls should be more of a light to medium taupe with cream woodwork, Your upholstered pieces would look lighter and brighter by contrast. I agree with the idea of painting the metal of your tables cream. And I would use as minimal window coverings as you can get away with regarding your needs for privacy and controlling sunlight. Cream drapes against taupe walls would be light and airy. I think you should remove the ivy, all the candle holders and the silk flowers. One large picture on that big wall with an English Country Garden theme would be so pretty in there. I am thinking of a picture of an old stone cottage with an overgrown wildflower and rose garden. It would add depth. Keep the top of the coffee table simple and uncluttered. A couple of books and a shallow, pretty bowl. When I look at the things you are working with, I see the possibility of a really fresh, airy English Cottage. Maybe even a few garden accents like a pretty weathervane or a statue of a rabbit all in one color. A throw in a deeper shade of pink than the roses on your couch would be a nice accessory. Not sure I like those plaid throw pillows or that you need any.

I agree with the person who said to frame the mirror in cream. That would be very pretty on a taupe wall.

Put a chair rail up about half way on the wall - it should be at least three inches thick. Paint the top half of your walls (above the chair rail) cream and white stripes about 12 inches wide, or paint the top half in one cream/tan color, but use eggshell and satin in the same paint color but alternating stripes - it has a ribbon effect, very subtle. Use masking tape to tape off the stripes and a one-foot ruler to mark w/ pencil where the tape will go. Paint the chair rail itself and also underneath the chair rail a darker cream/taupe/tan. So the chair rail is painted the same color as the paint color below it. Take off the wallpaper.

Get rid of the candelabra, it's too small for that large wall and gets lost. Put it on wall that doesn't have as much space around it, or above a small table against a wall. Or in your bathroom might be a good place as the room is smaller.

Get rid of the fake flowers or fake ivy or any fake plant stuff like that, it's tacky. Get real plants.

You can have a handyman frame the mirror with wide trim boards, easy and inexpensive. Have him nail trim boards right to the wall around the mirror.

What makes your room look like a funeral home is the combination of the heavy ornate curtains and curtain sheers, plus the floral furniture! Just have curtain panels on both sides of the window - that's it. Get rid of the shear curtain (open it up during the day) except use at night for privacy.

Curtains should pool at the bottom and touch the floor. have someone add a contrasting band of fabric to the bottom of the curtains to make them longer. Another trick is to hang the curtains higher, closer to the ceiling, it makes the windows look more impressive. Magazines do that all the time. If you can't afford new curtains, sew fabric in contrasting color to the bottom of your existing curtains.

Get rid of the throw pillows on the sofas. The sofas are busy enough of a pattern, don't add to it. Put cream pillows if you have any pillows at all. they will add "white space" on your busy-pattern sofa.

Buy wrought iron scroll type things to decorate walls.

Buy a wood coffee table from an antique store or online, inexpensive, and antique paint it with cream paint and sand the edges to give it a shabby chic look. Very inexpensive. Glass tables are generally NOT French country and since the coffee table is such a focal point, you need to have that piece look more French-country-authentic.

Put the two sofas facing each other, get the chair out of the corner and move it so that you have a U-shaped conversation area.I don't think you need a rug at all, but if you get one, get wider stripes - like tan and white stripes. It's the only thing you can put with a floral sofa to make it look a little more modern and up to date. You don't want this to look like an old lady house. Stripes on the walls and maybe a striped rug will freshen this up.

I just read jennatimberwood's post. Wow. She nailed it! Love everything: the painted antique coffee table, the cream pillows, and especially the striped rug in neutral colors.

She suggested wrought iron for wall decor. I think that should be the choice for decorative curtain rods also. A black fleur de lis or some pretty leaves on the finial at end of rod would be pretty and a compliment to very simple sheers.

Chair rail height or top of rail should be 28-30 inches.
