Ok sorry I did not give more information. This is my first time asking for advice. The house is traditional with a french twist. The cabinets are white, counter tops are combination of carrara marble and butcher block on the island. The island is painted a robin's egg blue with a glaze. We live in the USA and in South Carolina. My taste is mostly traditional but as it said with a french twist. I was leaning toward brown stained medium in color red oak floors. My builder is looking for a prefinished floor but may not find it so we would go back to the stained red oak. The house is a open floor plan. Jean

Life style is even a factor. Give us a hint...

Keywords being "French" & "Traditional"... I'd suggest something in a WHITE oak... much easier to work the colors around in.

Depending on your personal preferences... Rift & Quartersawn (the cut) is always a crowd pleaser, however plainsawn is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, after a long time off.

Finish style is another consideration... smooth? a nice subtle hand-scrape? (my preference)... or even a wire-brushed texture for enhanced durability and easier maintenance.

Your Builder is wise to suggest a "prefinished" option... (IMHO).

There are a wide variety of options out there... some good, some not.
