That is by far the most common recommendation. Not only is it local but usually reasonably priced too. And if they can't or don't do them then they can put you in touch with other sources.

Yea avoid those home soil test kits - they really don't tell much.

It is recommend to test the soil before randomly adding things to it.

Thatnks guys. I called our local extension office and they don't do soil testing, but give out info about where to send it in the state. Would this still be better than buying a kit online?

Yes. Having it done professionally is always better than doing the testing yourself with a home kit.

Definitely. The home test kits are essentially worthless and too often lead the gardener down the wrong road because of the false results they give. There have been several discussions here in the past comparing the results from a home test kit vs. the professional test results on the same soil. Not to mention the home test kits cost almost as much as a pro test does.
