Need help in my kitchen

We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel. Our budget is extremely tight, and we are using almost brand new cabinets that I got from a relative that had just bought a condo and wanted to redo their kitchen. There are a few issues, the cabinets are a beautiful cherry, During the move from where we got them, into storage, and now into our garage, they have some scratches, so do I paint them? Also, we are doing our best to get the cabinets to fit, but the sizes are off, this being said our sink is not going to be located center under the window. Also we are going to have some dead space in corners with the cabinets. It has been suggested we just get rid of the cabinets and get new ones but our budget doesn't allow it. We also removed a wall in between the kitchen and family room to create an open floor plan should the same flooring and paint color be used throughout?

You know, I am sorry to say it, but I don't know how you are going to make this look right without starting from scratch. What if you sold the cabinets and went with Ikea or Cabinets to Go?

That might be a possibility, hadnt thought of selling the cabinets. Thanks for the suggestion

Retrofitting with someone else's cabinetry may seem like a good idea in theory, however doing so usually costs the homeowner double in cost and aggravation. I agree with inabunker. Perhaps prefab cabinets from ikea would be the best choice as they can also provide 3 dimensional drawings of your space at no additional cost which would address all of your spaceplan issues. Their product is good and will last for several years plus they can finance. It's a fine choice when budgets are a challenge. Good luck!

Believe me, I know how expensive kitchens can be. But you know what? The biggest cost is the labor. I did a partial remodel and the labor was 65%. If you can save on that and do most the work yourself, then you would probably be able to afford starting from scratch. You are going to have to live with the kitchen for a long time and Leanne is right, it will probably cost you more in the long run to figure out how to make those cabinets work.

Have you investigated having matching doors, cabinet boxes, filler strips etc made to fill in the gaps? Did you have the wall constructed in order to use these cabinets or could you have an island? Are you trying to do a U shape, L shape, galley style? Have you looked at budget kitchen photos on Houzz with mismatched cabinet styles?

Photo 1, Painted uppers the same color as the wall give the illusion of more space

Photo 2 and 3, a kitchen island does not have to match.

Photo 4 & 5, open shelving is good on the budget with careful display and for dishes used on a daily basis. They can also be used to help fill in the gaps between upper cabinets.

Photo 5, the upper section is a different style but suits the room.

Don't give up on the cabinets just yet. Center the sink under the window and go from there. Have a cabinet arranging party or cut out cabinets and appliances on paper, to scale, and move around the pieces on a floor plan to try to come up with new ideas. You will almost definitely have some wasted space and have to supplement filler pieces or open storage as suggested above.

Bette P I did find a company that is not to far from me that does sell the same cabinets, I have not yet contacted them. We originally were going to use 4 cabinets to construct an island where we now have that half wall roughed out, but someone mentioned to me about when people would be sitting at the island, the cabinet doors would be scuffed up and I didnt like that Idea so we decided to go with the half wall. It would be a U shaped style. I didnt know that Houzz had budget kitchen photos and I will definitely check that out, thanks for all the suggestions!

When you are doing a search click photos, then look for the tabs on the left side of the page to define your search, there are many options to choose: room, style, layout for U shape, (budget see $ or $$) and size of the room.
