My kitchen is exactly as you describe but 11 feet wide. Sink is under window and range on the other side of the room. It was the best layout possible for our space and still make all our other must haves happen. It is approximately 3 steps between sink and range and it really isn't an issue. We did not do a prep sink because I just didn't want to give up the counter space for it, plus it's not a huge kitchen...2 sinks in our space, even a small one, would have just been silly. Yes, I carry boiling pasta water across the room but it's really not an issue for me. It is only my DH and I so no small children under foot. I think everyone has to make compromises and this was an easy one for me. We love our new kitchen.

Thanks so much. That is what I was thinking about putting a prep sink, but then yes I loose counter space on either end of range. Would it be possible for you to post a pic of your kitchen. Would really help. To the left of where my sink is I only have a sliding door. So basically even if I extend my counter top on either side I would have about three feet of space on either side of sink to prep. I would not have an Island because it is too narrow. Many thanks.

My kitchen is 13x9,.5 and I'm getting anxious for us to get my second sink installed. Size of kitchen has nothing to do with whether or not a prep sink would work. It's all about function, not size. I actually see few kitchens posted here that wouldn't benefit from a prep sink.

I think in kitchens where it's really too wide to be an efficient galley but not wide enough for an island, it's a great idea to have deeper counters on both sides of the kitchen. If you do 30" deep counters, you will lessen the distance between both counters. And if you have appliances or other items on your counters, they will be set back farther, out of the way, allowing more room to prep in front of those items. Even better, you will actually have more counter space to work on so putting a prep sink on the same counter run as the range will not feel like a loss of counter space.

Why don't you post a floor plan with dimensions? It would help us give you more exact advice for your situation.

If you can post a drawing with the surrounding rooms and dimensions, that'll help with understanding your space.

Mine is a small u-shape, about 10x12. The sink and cooktop are across from each each other, and I use a 2x4 stainless prep table between the two. It works perfect for my needs :)
