Your pets probably would not be attracted to most chemical fertilizers such as urea or ammonium nitrate because chemical fertilizers are odorless and I doubt that your pets would like the flavors of chemical fertilizers.

almost all organic fertilizers are pretty safe.. fish emulsion is just that fish. unless they'll be drinking half the bottle, a simple lick of the soil when watering isn't going to harm them..

anything organic will likely have a "smell" to it.. perhaps as mentioned above, they might not be attracted to the smell of synthetic fertilizers, then again, if you do use them; they are more harmful if they do eat it..

One chemical fertilizer, potassium nitrate, is often mined and, as such, not synthetic. Eating fertilizer is not an issue. The issue is whether eating soil is harmful to pets. Some people have a mental disorder in which they eat soil and doctors advise them against it because soil can harbor parasites.

I guess I should have worded my question better... I was wary of using fish emulsion because I'm afraid my cats would eat the plants, or dig up the soil. I like to use organic fertilizer for my outdoor garden because of the long term benefits for the soil. Inside, I'm growing fast growing crops in small pots, so I'm not as concerned. So, it looks like I'll try some dilute miracle grow for now.
