you could darken the shade of the polish by adding some darkening ageant to the colour instead of keeping it natural which is making it look red.I suggest you try out a sample as darkening it could kill the grains by hiding them.

if it still doesnt work for you, try putting a darker veneer or just try darkening the shelf and the visible area above it and keep the rest of it completely white.
