Need help with dining room!

last modified: 11 years ago

Hi! I just finished switching my dining room into the room we were previously using as a playroom. Which now places it in the room that was originally intended to be the dining room. The reason we were not using it as the dining room was because it was the smaller of the two rooms. But we found that its location wasn't working (guest seem to not want to wander too far from kitchen) and it wasn't being used. SO, it is now where it was supposed to be, but room is smaller. Old dining furniture is too big. Our first trial at using the new dining room didn't work too well. Not enough room to walk around the table when in use. We decided to sell our 13 year old set and buy something better suited for the room. Blank canvas! The only piece I have purchased is a dining table. I fell in love with this table but i'm unsure what chairs and sideboard will look good with it? Not sure what colors to use? Or if i should get the matching chairs? What type of rug would look best? I'm leaning toward Jute-style. Any help would be appreciated. My style seems to be someone between modern-country and coastal chic! Love ocean colors, soft shades. Planning on painting room white to off-white. Room is small square, approx. 12 x 12 with chair rail. Thanks for help!!! Leeanne

Some random items that i'm not sure if they can be included in the dining room?

    Mirror

    Candleholders

    Tray

Panel hanging in room (i had brought one home to try a week ago, only have 2 panels right now)

Grandma's antique chair (i'm guessing its out! lol)

What may work nicely in your front entry is a corner cabinet. It would give you more room to maneuver.

The cabinet currently in the entry could be used in the dining room.

The mirror in your entry would be great over the fireplace. It would mimic the arches on the windows.

Does the sofa in the fireplace room fit facing the fireplace? If so that would make for a great place to view the fireplace. I can't see the other wall in that room so I'm not sure if you have a TV in there. Putting a chair in front of each window but floated about 4 or 5 feet from the windows wall on angles facing the sofa. It looks as if you have a 3rd chair in there that may be a bit cramped for the room. If that is the same teacart that was in the dining room it looks great in there.

The light fixture in your breakfast area is great! Maybe look for a round table though.

The curtain panels are very pretty. I personally don't thing they work in the room though.

Yes i'm searching for a round table to replace kitchen table, not sure how i go about the two tables (dining and kitchen) complementing each other but not looking too alike colorwise?

In the family room (fireplace) there is a SECOND teacart, i've inherited one from my mom and another from my mother in law.

Yes, there is another chair in family room and a tv on the side of it in the corner.

*The part of the universe that i live :) is New England -- about 70" of snow last winter!!! So i definitely need the dining room to work through all seasons!

Too many irons in the fire I think. Right now you have guests coming and should focus on the dining room unless something amazing comes your way. Also making the family room flow a bit better for you and for company. Can you take pictures of all 4 walls in the family room and get the size of the room including openings? It can be a rough napkin drawing as long as the numbers are pretty much correct. Does the family normally hang out in that room? How many in the family?

Two tea carts yikes. We need a close up of each. Have you tried one in the entry on an angle?

I used to have the smallest tea cart in the entry way but it didn't fit that great, too wide stuck out, wheels are big when its angled it comes out pretty far. I'll measure family room today and add new pics. My husband wants to get the tv out or buy a smaller one - the one we have is about 50" screen.

If i turn the sofa to face the fireplace is it okay for back of sofa to be what you see when looking into the room?

Do you think another reclaimed table (round this time) in kitchen with same chairs as dining so they can be brought in when needed is okay? Since tables are so close is it better to keep it all close to the same instead of competing sets?

How often does that happen? 1-3 times a year? I would do something different for sure. Maybe painted one of the colors you are using in the dining room?

Should i do something entirely different with wicker chairs? Sort of like these?

I think there was a better one I saw before in the feed from ikea maybe at the end of the table in the photo. Not sure what space you have but I like the textural interest since you are all wood in the dining room ( I would add some seat cushions for comfort in there ). These look large maybe something with more leg showing. Pay attention to seat height, some of these can be low and can make it awkward to eat.

Call me crazy but i just ordered these chairs for kitchen, they were $200 off each chair from PB (can't beat their quality) and if i have to return i will, but things marked down go fast! I was thinking of painting them a color? Good or bad move? : ? The wicker chairs are too expensive if i get a decent quality, all the chairs in my price range had bad reviews, stories of chairs breaking and people falling down!!! At $99 per chair i thought i may be able to use the PB chairs without feeling bad if i paint them a color.

I know i have a lot going on all at once but i'm hoping to make everything come together soon! Thank you all for your help!!! I want to get big purchases done so i can focus on the smaller stuff since i don't have more than a few weeks.

This is the old set in kitchen ... which chairs do you think work better near new dining room? PB i just ordered or these? I thought these may be a little busy nearby to the new dining room cross-back chairs? I've always loved these chairs, thought about painting these a different color!

They would be wonderful and add whimsy painted in the Fiesta ware colors.

These are all the fiesta ware colors so you have a lot to choose from. It would set the two rooms apart. Any round table would work but I would think a distressed base and wood top would look best.
I'm sad about the teacarts. They are such important pieces and give a nod to your families. I would hate to see you paint or part with either of them. The problem being the dining room is small and you need to use every square inch. Your living room has to much furniture as it is.

I'm guessing you don't have a finished basement? You may be able to (depending on the children's ages) put the playroom down there and use the current playroom as a "parlour"/den. It would look great as you enter the home and you would spend less time tidying up after the kidlets.

Our basement is finished somewhat but we had a flood last year and haven't refinished it yet but need to get it done within the next 7 months or so for insurance reasons -- so i have plans of moving curio (which is currently hidden in corner of dining room you can't see in pics) down there and a few other pieces, like my cedar chest, but teacart could go also!

Love the idea of painting chairs to match Fiesta! Should i look for a round white table so it blends with set in dining? Or a reclaimed round?

I would think you would want the round table base to match the cabinets. The top...Anything that works.

Cabinets are light cream with white wash glaze but not distressed at all.

If you are doing the colored chairs - and I think they would look great. I would keep the table base matching.

Matching one of the chair colors? Or matching to dining room set? Or cabinets? LoL - my brain is overloaded, sorry : )

What about a kitchen table this color?

Okay found these for dining, this one is small - i could fit two

Or this one, its mirrored and bigger, would only use one, i like that it picked up the design on the chairs. Not sure how mirror would look, but i was wondering if i could just remove it and let the shelf show?

Loooove this and its the perfect size! What do you all think? It would look so nice with a reclaimed top (eventually)

Love that last one it's great! I think you would want the dining room to stand on it's own with it;s own personality and a bit more formal then the kitchen. Your kitchen is viewable to the family room and dining room so you don't want it to clash or require you to add more of the aqua/seafoam color to the living room. This is why, if you do paint the chairs, that you should make the table blend with the kitchen cabinet color. It will still work with the viewable area in the dining room if you paint one of the chairs the Aqua color as per the cabinet above and you can have the other colors dispersed in the living room with accents.

    Okay, ordered it! : )

And just ordered these (i'm on a roll)

So this is where we are at

Okay, one more look at this one -- i'm not against ordering both and returning one -- its between these - i do like how the X is carried through on the drapes and buffet and chair.

Ties it together nicely...the only hesitation is the room will look very summery without deeper colored end panels. Maybe something in an open weave- deep beige - perhaps even a burlap. That would fly nicely with a jute rug and add texture to the room.

I'm not opposed to having spring/summer drapes and autumn/winter drapes -- changes the room up a little for the seasons.

    Which sideboard would you pick?

I like the second one. Where are you putting the sideboard?

Back left corner -- after measuring i realize i just can't fit one on the big right wall where i really want to put a very narrow long table. So it will have t be in the left!

How about this rug? Its marked down and pretty neutral, picks up the brown table and lighter curtains, chairs?

The rug would work. Just make sure it's not a chore to clean.

Do you think its too busy being multi colored?

    last modified: 11 years ago

It's a subtle multicolored weave and as of now you have no patterns in the room so it's not an issue.

  • PRO

    Really just good textural interest.

Ok thanks, i wasn't sure if the scroll design on sideboard was a little busy for mutil-colored rug. I ordered it to try out.

Running into a few little dilemmas ... the PB chairs arrived and they are NICE - slightly off-white, very comfortable, slightly distressed -- they look better with the dining table than the white chairs with the X - for a couple reasons, they are taller, look more substantial next to large table, they blend nice with the off-white wash on the table and they are waaaay more comfortable!

Do these below look a little too short?

Yes the taller chairs look better. Comfort is always key particularly during long family meals!

A few questions. If the chairs are off-white, instead of white, does that mean i should switch to off-white curtains and off-white shade on chandelier? The rug i ordered looks off-white with multi shades of light brown. This is where i always get confused. Is it okay to mix whites and off-whites? What color should wall be white of off-white and moldings? Time to start putting all of this together and get room painted! Thanx for help!!!

The trim in your home is white. That gives you the opportunity to use white or off white interchangeably. You want to blend them so one does not look dirty against the other. As far as the wall paint I would suggest you use a flat white paint that has a hint of green such as BM Vanilla Milkshake

The room is green now and i am kind of tired of looking at it lol .. would it work okay with using a white with a hint of blue? My sideboard is blue, or would that look too matching?

Green, blue, beige or grey..you want just a hint of color to offset the white trim, lighting and curtains and work with your color accent plans.

Should molding be white or slightly off white?

The trim should match in all view-able rooms.
