Oversized seating is usually what throws a monkey wrench into good design. I'd suggest a sofa and two to four chairs for more flexible seating.

Oh, maybe 4-6, but maybe up to 7 or 8.

Do you see that area where the kids craft table is as being integrated into the living room, or do you see that area as more of a separate space? If so, how would you use it? I've thought formal dining, but we aren't "formal dining" sort of people. I'm lost.

While they're small that will work for them. Once they're older you can add a nice family game/snack table and chairs there.

Let's ignore where the rug is placed for now & try to find a suitable placement for seating.

I would try a sofa placed floating in the room facing the fireplace. Take the measurements for a normal size sofa to see if it will fit in your space. Try the chair & ottoman to the corner area to the right of the fireplace angled toward the sofa. I'm thinking the corner where the kids items are will need to be treated separately much the way it is now. Build space around the bookcase for two smaller scaled accent chairs and a floor lamp in the corner.

Work with three or four ottomans in the room to be brought into either space for additional seating. An accent table needs to be placed next to the chair with a table lamp on it.

The rug should be placed the long ways of the sofa under the front legs & to include the corner chair, ottoman & nesting tables with lamp on it. Add drapes from the ceiling to the floor in a color from your rug. Add accessories, pillows for accents. Replace your current bookcase with a tall one to fit between the two smaller accent chairs.

Seem your kids have been enjoying the play corner, but if you want to add some seating places for adult, it seems necessery to use this corner for the big chair, with some nice lighting and some hanging bookcases and a small side table.

I would find a sofa that goes well with the big leather chair, eather a bright color or dark grey/black. Fabric can with some treatment be just a practical as leather.

The windoes seem un symetrical, but i would place the sofa up a gaint that wall or across from the fireplace, and then place the lather chair right to the fireplace.

An ottoman as a coffetable would may be practical with kids.

Here are some afordable furniture i hope you like. Make the space comfortable with some big pillows and some soft lighting. With the black sectional and the chair and the two ottomans there is 8 seating places.

Just thought I'd update this thread......we have decided to use this room as an adults-oriented space, complete with bar (pottery barn BANKS BAR), which we will center between the two windows. The corner with the kids toys will be a seating area; I'm thinking settee/banquette, with a table and a couple of chairs on the other side. Here, people can socialize, play games, or watch a football game on the TV that will be hung on the wall behind the bar, between the two windows.

We think putting two cozy easy chairs in front of the fire, with a large ottoman for two pairs of feet, and a table between the two chairs, will give us lots of seating, with easy mobility, should a chair or two need to be turned to the direction of the fireplace or TV.

I'll update this again once the bar has arrived and is in place.
