Two more things: the picture shows the original furniture there, we have brown leather couches that will go in that room. We don;t have any wall treatment, lamps of tables. Also, should we have built-ins on each side of the rock chimney?

I would leave the wood wall, but whether it stays the same color or whitewashed will depend upon the look you are going for. This room could be coastal inspired, true farmhouse, mountain lodge or even modern, but furniture and accessories will dictate its look.

I see a few things that stand out.. The floors clash with the walls... With the onset of barn wood walls being a design feature, I would keep the wood on the walls, hand distress them a bit and even stain a few of them to be off color.

Then I would restrain my floors to something with a grey undertone.. This would help frame the fireplace.

I agree that built ins would be beautiful, but something subtle in color or a nice white. ... You can see in this photo how well these colors work together:



Because the walls are so large, I would fill the space with a gallery wall to fill the space. Additionally, the furniture in this room is too small for the space, so when choosing new furniture, use bigger pieces.

What size and style are your brown leather couches? Are they transitional style as you like? Perhaps wait until you move in to see how they look with the brown wood wall and yellowish tone floor. I would not paint until you have chosen all of your furnishings. Take your time. There's no need to do anything until you live in your new home for a while.

Hello there! We recommend leaving the wood walls, but stain them a bit. The accessories will help you determine the wall colors. We suggest a cooler-toned and maybe larger area rug. Good luck!

Stain wood wall a distress gray(fp) Too many different wood tones. Love the built ins. Cute place. Leather wood work or go coastal with a white couch.

I'd give the wood a wash of grey w a green undertone ( pewter green is one good one), and lighten the rafters to just slightly deeper in tone than the ceiling. Ditto the trimwork. Remove the panelling on the back wall, and find a pair of consoles or wood storage for either side of the fireplace.

There doesn't seem to be much sense in another accent wall here with so much else going on, so I suggest letting the walls and ceiling be the same shade. I think those changes will give you a palette that ties the floor to the fireplace, and reduces some of the other noise in the room.

Wow, thank you so much for all the great ideas. I will follow the tones from the fireplace as suggested. i might need to keep the wood wall as is for a while since husband loves it. With my brown leather couches it will probably look more "masculine and rustic" which is not exactly what i want, but i will follow the advice and move my furniture in before making any major chances. Will post a picture with my things in the space for more help, since I know i will still need it!.. Thanks again!!

Is there going to be a large TV in the room? Do you want a Transitional Feeling in the room or Lodge like?

Add a mirror & art, so it's not all male. Add some white nick nacks.

If tv, on red wall. I would paint that wall first. No accent wall.

This room has lots of potential. There's a lot competing at the moment. My first move would be to get rid of that red "accent wall". Paint the walls white and the wooden wainscot next to the fireplace white. Would love to see the large wooden wall whitewashed. It would work better with the fireplace and then you would have a clean canvas for big statement art, big table, big rug etc. Agree with the above comment about this room needing bigger furniture :)

I would paint everyting in the room a warm cream, BM -09 Cloud or white tone you like. If there is a skylight in this room the windows probably are not sufficient for enough day light.I would also have an area rug cut from broadloom carpet for the entire room to soften all those rocks and beams with a wood border of one foot showing all the way around the room.

Bring in your brown leather sofas in and do an L shape with sofa facing fireplace and other sofa facing windows. Place pairs if tables and lamps on either end of sofa by wall. Console behind sofa facing fireplace with a lamp and accessory that is large and unique or do a Candice Olson long twig lamp on the console. Bring in a pair of large lounge chairs for either side of the fireplace facing the sofas. Round ottoman custom made or two retangular cocktail table put together to form a large square for drinks, etc. Small end tables not matching by lounge chairs.

If there is more room behind the sofa/console then add game table or pair of lounge chairs and bar area.

This room has similar feel to what your room can be?
