Mirror on mantel tilts up and just shows the ceiling. Art would be more interesting.

Coffee table ideas.

I love all the glass top tables people have suggested, but having had a glass top table for 20 years, I will share with you that they are the hardest things to keep clean that you can choose. Because they are so shiny, they show every particle of dust and every glass ring. Just food for thought.

I agree, between my stainless steel appliances, ceramic stove, glass dining room table etc its ridiculous the upkeep.

Coffee table/ottoman from Overstock:

There are some really nice tables that have a mirrored/gold etched finish. We were in a show home designed by Brian Gluckstein and he used the table below. My sister purchased one after we saw it and it's lower maintenance than glass and very pretty and she also likes the second level. If you have young children though, it may not be practical or safe.

That fixture has a bit of a rustic/industrial feel to it. If you like that look, a distressed table that has a grey pantina to work with your couches, with metal legs.

S&A Decor - can you advise why a glass coffee table is not suitable? My sister has the mirrored version in one of my entries above and it sits about 4 ft from her gas fireplace and has not had an issues. Thanks, I'm curious and I'll warn my sister.

I would do a cream colored leather ottoman, perhaps a storage one, maybe some silver nailhead trim, with an oversized silver or mirror tray. For the console, go with the same color vinyl with nailhead trim, and x style silver metal legs. It will update the room, create a statement, and be comfortable. Also add mercury glass accessories in a variety of heights and sizes on the mantle and console. You can add the little battery operated string lights on both fireplace and console for some romantic night lighting. And add a cream faux-fur throw.

Your room is off balance--loveseat next to the window is too far from the other seating and other sofa and the rug, need to be centered with the fireplace.

Also, like Maureen's idea to try both loveseats across from each other.

Lee lee , I appreciate your suggestion but there is not enough room on the left of the fireplace for the couch. If I put it there I would have an extremely narrow hallway and the couch would be blocking the view of part of the fireplace. The rug was off by 2 inches. I moved it and moved the love seat in about a foot.

Our living-dining room is similarly configured and we put a mirrored buffet next to the fireplace. A console or chest of drawers would work too. I empathize with your point about maintaining, but with low usage it only needs occasional dusting. You'll find it will brighten up the corner and not conflict with anything else in the room. An excellent transition piece.

Whatever you choose for tables, you need some color in that room somewhere. It's dark and the light, velvety looking upholstery seems to fade into the picture. Get some bright, cheery pillows or some curtains that pop!

I agree with Maureen that a big piece of art would look good there and with that, don't think you'd need any furniture in the space. Or, you could get a cat and put a cat tower there. :-).

You need contrast in the room. Everything is rectangular and upholstered. Go for a round glass topped table. Contrasting shape and surface. The sell a dark rimmed one (to balance the pale colors) for around $450. It has two glass surfaces, and is sturdy enough to put your feet up, and is very easy to keep clean. Others have mentioned the round table. Trust us, it will look best.

Awesome ideas everyone! And nice place, wb14! I find I can't add to it, except to say to definitely find a way to add some color in that room, without cluttering it up.... think, warm it up, not clutter it up.

This bugs me, though, from S&A Decor: "Since you have a fire place a light or glass coffee table won't work."

That statement makes zero sense. If you get a chance, please show a picture of what you mean wouldn't work so it's clear?

I love Maureen's ideas. Seating flanking the fireplace. Glass coffee table, but how about two square end tables together as a coffee table. Size appropriate of course. Mercury glass or smokey antiqued so you can see through it yet not totally & it would camouflage any dust or finger prints. A large round starburst mirror above the fireplace with enough space from the bottom with a grouping of tall candlesticks to the left. Floating shelves on the right side would balance the candlesticks & would offer a place for a TV if you wanted it. Sheers to flank the window but only for drama and softness. Bronze nearing tables in the corner for future use and a place to put your reading material and drink as you cozier up next to the fireplace. Move the chair into your bedroom or another room in your home. Keeping the opening clear invites people into your room and beckons them to come in and stay a while, keeps the view of your beautiful fireplace also. Sometimes less is more. I love your couches and as others have mentioned about color, you can add pops of color with pillows, a throw over the edge of the couch or love seat. Your personal pictures on the shelving and some flowers on the mantle.

I agree with @candleflower42 that a single very big piece of art without any furniture would look great in the recess next to the fireplace. Lighting would be important though.

The oval coffee table that groveraxle posted looks good IF you opt for a coffee table but with two loveseats, inevitably there is the issue of where to put it -- in front of which sofa.

Consider small square ottomans and, instead of a coffee table, add narrow side tables the depth of your love seats to catch books and eyeglasses and/or coffee cups and/or candle holders. If you could get small square tables and ottomans that match, a combination of the two could work well.

Suezbell, I probably should have taken more pics from different angles. I have a couch and a love seat.

For next to the fireplace, I suggest a combination of an interesting chest, lamp and art to balance the doorway. These are from our latest Ethan Allen collections.

I love Ethan Allen furniture. I have almost 30k worth in my home. HOWEVER, will never purchase from them again. Customer service is atrocious. Prices continue to rise because sales have dropped drastically over the last decade. The sales people are wonderful, but after the sale is made you're on your own to fight with the company. Not just my experience... research before you buy, please.

Go to A Bassett store. They have in store designers that will help you. Plus, you can customize pieces.

• Agree with scveenhoff. Room is dominated by rectilinear shapes and mass. Suggest a round table, contrasting in shape and material - solid top, steel or wood with minimal base (floating effect), and hard surface. Carpet is too small - does not pull room components together. Also leave space beside/around fireplace clear - to appreciate it as the room's feature. Space is a luxury, minimize clutter and enjoy it.

I think any coffee table is an impediment to sofa seating because you always have to walk around it to seat yourself. Also it tends to collect stuff, including dust. I would recommend a long , narrow table behind the sofa with some good reading lamps, and 2 side tables. I am of the persuasion that the greatest luxury is space.

I'm inclined to agree your lovely rug is too small, guessing you'd need one that's larger than an 8x10 . However, you might get away with what you have if there were an end table next to the 3-seater sofa to distract the eye from the floor.

My 2¢ worth on a round coffee table in this setting: my experience is that functionally it's a poor choice. There's just not enough "frontage" to be useful.

You're just fine with the rug size. If you choose a small to medium scale coffee table, the front legs of the sofa and chair will rest on the rug.

I also have dark floors and light colored walls. This is an Uttermost console in a beautiful honey colored finish.

One view of room makes it difficult to comment on sizes, but suggest a larger rug coloured background with bold and dark geometric pattern. Apply similar dark colour to fireplace (mantle only) to visually connect the two and establish a lower, horizontal feel to room - again difficult to judge ceiling height from photo. Possible horizontal group of smaller, colourful, framed and same sized art works (prints) wall mounted above mantel. Consider the type/duration of light from sunroom(?) - morning or afternoon exposure, in your colour choices.

I would suggest a console table to credenza to put on each side of the fireplace. For a coffee table, an oval shape on curved legs would add interest to the room since you have so many square shapes in the furniture.

Face the sofas across from each other and add a rectangle coffee table. Rug size is good! Don't be afraid to add a tall armoire in the niche in charcoal. The wall opening on the other side will balance it. Stick with your monochromatic color palette (grays and whites) and have fun!

Move the love seat closer to the sofa to make some more room for a console to fit the TV. Remove the mirror from the mantle. I would go with a round ottoman for coffee table:

I'm suggesting some reclaimed wood items to 'funk up' the space. It is so predictable now.

I removed the round ottoman from my choices as it was white & you need a color.
