What guidelines would you recommend I follow to get the proper size?

First, some table guidelines. Beside seating they should come to within 1" of the seating arms. A coffee table should come to within 1-3" of the sofa seat height and sit no more than 18" from the sofa. If I were you, I'd go for a substantial round coffee table but keep the width 1/3 - 1/2 of the sofa's overall length. If you decide on a rectangular one, it should be no longer than 2/3 of the length between the sofa's arms. Add a table and lamp between the sofa and the right chair. The table and lamp should come to 58-64" from the floor. Add a smaller accent table beside the other chair. I wouldn't have any of them be a matched "set." Have you considered a beefed up mantel - I think it would do so much for your room.

I can't tell from the photo you posted if there is a sectional or two sofas. Either way a round coffee table would be both functional and attractive. It is more comfortable to sit a glass down next to you than to reach or actually have to get up to pick up or put a glass down on a coffee table. I recommend a small rectangular table at the end of the sofa that one of the pair of club chairs can use for its table and then a small round or square (12" x 12") drinks table to the left of the other club chair. This way you can still pass between the 2 chairs. If you have a pair of sofas instead of a sectional then I recommend a square side table and table lamp in the corner between the two sofas. The least functional coffee table or ottoman is one that floats in the middle of the room that people have to actually get up from their seats to use. Decoentusiaste's size and distance from sofas guidelines will help you choose the right size coffee table. Your existing table that slides over the sofa could be placed at the end of the sofa on the left.

Deco, thank you for the ideas on the mantel but that is not in the works. I love organic and natural materials, and a mantel with trim wood is not my style. Now a bulky slate piece could be discussed in the future. :-) Mantel decorations are on the back burner until I settle on my tables. So excuse the state of it now.

I really am leaning towards a huge round table in the middle and two small c-tables that are very portable. I'm trying to scale back on the pieces in this room and that seems like the best option. There will be a console table going between the couch and wall. It's a handmade piece of local reclaimed barnwood. I'm just waiting for the artisan to finish it up.

I like "C" tables, especially at the end of a chaise styles where there is no arm.Do you like "live edge" pieces? Didn't understand you were into organic from what you posted. Don't know how it stacks up against slate price-wise.

Large coffee table and since one single chair can share the side table with the couch, if you wanted you could add a small table to the other one. Adding anything inbetween the 2 chairs, interfers with the fireplace view. In regards to the coffee table, I would go with a large rustic style (like the one below but square)...accessorizing will make it a great addition to the room.
