What should I put on these shelves?

I'm in desperate need of inspiration. I have huge built-ins in my living room, and the shelves are 23 inches wide. Everything I put on them seems dwarfed by their size. I have a ton of books that need a home, but I don't want these shelves to look too busy, so my original plan was to do a few antique books and then some pictures and knickknacks. But everything looks tiny! As for what to put on the top of the built-ins... Ugh. I'm at a loss. Please help!

Also... The windows are off center. It's a long story. Any tips for how to design the tops of the cabinets that might make them appear more centered would be great too. Thank you!

Your built-ins are gorgeous!! I think that the off-center windows are not a problem. I am sure that you will get some great ideas on here.

i would suggest that you get some lamps and not use overhead lighting....it is very unflattering. I love your room!!

Lamps would be wonderful. Might I also suggest that you paint the back of the bookshelves the same color as the walls. Or, use a grasscloth in a similar color to the walls. Just to bring some visual interest in and relieve the whiteness. Then lay a stack of books (sort of a pyramid with the largest book on the bottom) into shelves on opposite sides. A large vessel into one, maybe. Keep the contents simple, maybe a pop of color and large to make a statement. And bring the articles more to the front on each shelf.
