Backsplash Questions?

I have a couple questions concerning my backsplash. I'd like some help in picking some out and the other is what do I do for the sides?

I want to cover the kitchen sink wall, but the sides where the drywall is has me confused. I don't know, if I should use the same and stop it in a certain spot or if a side splash the same as the countertop is ok?

I'm planning on going with Corian Rain Cloud for countertops. I have attached the wall in question and the pendant lights that I'm working with also. I'm open to suggestions about the backsplash color and type. I've looked at the plain subway and the more retro look but didn't know if that went with my pendants.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I also just covered the back wall, I think it looks odd when it covers the side.

Me too. There's always an awkward stopping point when the backsplash wraps around the sides.

Your cabinets and pendants are so unique, I don't think white subway would do it justice. Have you gone to a tile store with a good designer?

I just did a quick search in the photos for "Side kitchen backsplash" and a couple of photos popped up. If you have a sink by the sidewall, then it probably makes sense, as water could splash up on the wall. I don't believe you do, so it is more of an decorative option, as in the first picture. Do you like the look of it wrapping around?

Agree with emilyam819. You have done such a beautiful job so far. I would go to a tile specialty shop and find an interesting backsplash that will work with your cool pendants. Do you have a sample of your Corian Rain Cloud counter?

A gray backsplash could work nicely....try to look for some samples, bring home, and post pictures. There are so many gorgeous tiles to choose from, and in this case, I really don't think a white tile will do much, unless it has some texture to it.

Thank you all for your responses! I was thinking it would look weird to wrap around also. Like you say no stopping point. I have went to some tile stores, but nothing really stood out to me! No I have not went to a designer.

I really like clean lines as you can see. These are a few I've found, but the two blend to much probably and the other may be to bold!

Julie yes my sink is in the middle below the window like in that picture. I do like the wraparound in that picture, but I'm afraid it might look odd in my situation because the wall stops short. Thanks for the visual!

Karen thank you so much. No I do not have a sample. I did but the countertop guy took it back. I can probably get it back from him.

I know what you mean by a white subway tile not doing it justice. I just want to make sure I don't take away from the pendants either. So you see why I was needing all of your help:). Thanks again

I was thinking I would probably have to order samples online because there weren't a lot locally!

This is what Rain Cloud looks like. I did have a picture.

The Rain Cloud will look lovely on the gray cabinets. I like the stainless steel tile you showed or a simple subway. If you choose a strong tile statement it will look busy once you put things on the counter - even a vase of bright flowers would get lost. You might want a soft white subway with a stainless tile feature behind the cooktop.

What a light teal backspash to reflect your pendants?

One of the beauties of Corian is that you can obtain a seamless look, especially if your sink is done in Corian as well. Consider using it as your back splash too.

If you're going for some contrast, take a look at these tinted glass tiles.

Beaside thank you, that's what I was afraid of colors. Stove is on the island so I won't be able to put anything behind it.

Amelia, if I could find a teal glass tinted maybe like at one design said?

Act one design I consider chorion backsplash, but it was going to be a lot more than I wanted to spend. I am getting the integrated bowl. I also have a prep sink with the integrated bowl on the island.

Thank you all for your suggestions

My cabinet pull samples came today! This is a 36 inch cabinet with a 15 inch pull does this look about the right size?

    looks right to me.

Love your cabinet color and flooring. what kind of flooring is that? And where did you find it?

    Looks perfect!

    Nnigrt thank you.

Dowdeller11 thank you it is Mediterranean boardwalk Myrtle Beach. I got it at a local tile store. It comes in smaller planks also and a couple other colors.

My countertops finally have arrived! I still have not made it to get backsplash samples:( I'm hoping to over the weekend. The countertops are not set yet just laying on top for now. I'm still waiting on the island top to be done.

I'm still thinking the light gray subway tile! Does anyone have any other suggestions now that you see the countertops?

There are lots of online places to get backsplash samples -- some have deals like 5 samples for $5 or $10, so you can try a lot of looks before settling on something.

Personally, I think a longer tile -- like 3" or 4" x 12" would work well with the modern feel of your pulls. I also really like the idea of something bold, since aside from the pendants, your palette is very grey (and it doesn't look like the backsplash covers a lot of area, so it needn't overwhelm). It would be nice to have something tying in that very cool turquoise. I'd say just make sure it's something you love. :)
Motherofgiants thank you for your response. I would like something bigger like you suggested. I thought added some turquoise to the backsplash but guess I was thinking of playing it safe! Lol. (With the gray/silver)

Ok here's another question because we actually want to add some backsplash to this other wall! I know people probably will not like this idea but we want a TV in the kitchen. We are planning on putting it on this wall. The backsplash would almost frame the TV. The refrigerator will have a cabinet around it. It just came in the wrong size so it's not in the picture.

Here is a pic that gave me an idea! I know it's more formal than mine, but I still like it. I hope you understand the picture. Thank you all for all the help.

I got some samples in today. I like the size of the 4x12 subway. I also like both colors. They both seem to go with the pendants. What do you all think? One seems soft while the other is bold!

I like the soft color. Are the small rectangles and large rectangles the same color/brand/material? If so, you can develop a design using both. For ex, a row of large, several rows of small, more large.

Emily good idea. Yes they are the the same brand and color. I will look for some images of mixing the two together and see if I like it. Thanks

We installed a brushed titanium backsplash, we looove it! We have slate for flooring and this compliments it perfectly...so i think with your flooring, also being busy, it may be an option for you!
Poochieck that looks nice. Does it scratch at all? Also my first thought was to go with a gray color, but was afraid it would blend into my cabinets. This is way harder than I thought it would be!

    Hi,

Here's my two cents for what its worth:

    1. Do wrap around your tile. If you don't have that ugly 4" kick you have to - you can't just have the counter meet drywall. And please don't have that ugly 4" kick. Also, if your wall color and backsplash color are pretty much the same it won't look obvious where you're not so thrilled about the idea.

    2. Do you know what wall color you are planning? You have lovely color going on with your pendants and your cabinets so I hope light and neutral. Maybe creamy to match the counter. (LOVE your counter by the way and so glad someone still loves Corian and not just granite). This may sound boring, but creamy (to match counter and walls) 3 x 6 subway tiles for the backsplash. Other things may sound more interesting now, but in the long run you may hate it.

    3. While you still can, do something about those outlets. They are going to stick out like a sore thumb against your backsplash - especially if you choose one of those turquoises. Have your electrician move them low and horizontal or put a strip up high where its hidden. Pay to patch the drywall, its worth it because you can't move them later.

    Good luck.

Msrmom thank you so much for your complement. Yes corian was a must have when planning the kitchen. I know about the outlets they do stick out! No I'm not doing 4in kick!

Are you meaning wrap around as in doing the sides/ends?

My wall color is already painted. It's a light gray. I had my pantry doors painted the dark gray like my cabinets.

You are saying go with a creamy as in more white tones correct?

I am wanting something that I will not get sick of in the long run. I know they say if you find something you love then you won't get sick of it, but I'm a pretty neutral person. The pendants were a step for me!
I haven't noticed that it scratches at all, it is hard to tell in the picture, but this has a more gold tone to it, there are many different sizes, shapes, textures, and colors available! We bought ours from HJ Martin, I have noticed it is hard to find pictures online of this. I will try to find the brand name if you would like to research more!

Love your kitchen. I think a subway tile backsplash in a light gray would be neutral and easier to match with your countertops. I have a white marble countertop and found it difficult to get the right white/cream backsplash. I think the pendants are all the color you need as you appear to like neutrals. I would not wrap the backsplash around the corner. Much cleaner lines to stop at back corner.

Poochiek thanks. Yes it does seem to have more gold tones in it.

Jodie thank you I found a gray but I think it's to dark. It's kinda a silver gray. I'll post pic in a bit. I may just have to keep looking.

Here is the gray/silver I got.

You have done a great job so far, poshky! We think a subway tile backsplash is classic and timeless, and it would work well in your space. One of our homeowners chose a grey subway that has a slight blue tint. A similar color would complement your pendants without competing too much. Good luck on the rest of your project! Make sure to show us the finished space!

The gray/silver glass will look rather dark when it is installed. The teal is better and plays off the pendants. The titanium or stainless look the best, IMO. You could do the wall framing the TV in the teal and the wall framing the window in stainless. Your kitchen is big enough that they don't have to be the same. Just some thoughts.

Mitch thank you so much! I can't wait for the finished product:) Your customers kitchen is beautiful. You did a great job. Thank you for the picture.
Beseaside thank you for addressing the TV situation:) I was wondering if it had to match or not? Maybe I could do a gray/silver grout with the turquoise around TV? And like you said something different by window.
I got some new samples today. Any thoughts on these?

When you settle on your backsplash for above the countertop with the sink, turn the corner but only for as far as the overhead cabinets turn the corner. Consider using a solid color granite or tile for a vertical border at the edge using one of the colors within the countertop..
