I am saddened at hearing about the loss of your home. You will have a new home when you finish though.

In looking at your floor plan and your photo, I think your kitchen is open to the living room. If that is indeed the case, keep the same flooring in the kitchen that you use in the living room. This will make your home look larger because the kitchen is now part of the living room and not visually separated by flooring.

I suggest you have all your baseboards, door/window facings, doors and cabinets the same color. I recommend white, not off white. Your ceilings should all be white also. Your walls can then be an almost white in a color that you love. By almost white, I mean the lightest color on the paint chip.

Your floors don't need to be a light color to keep your home open. Choose a color of wood for your floors that you love, not one you think you should love or like. My personal preference is toward darker floors with the white and almost white because of the beautiful contrast it creates.

As you are planning your lighting, use lots of 4" recessed cans with a flat trim kit to conceal the light. You will want to use led spot lights (not flood lights). I can give you a link to where I buy mine if you are interested.

Don't forget to include the under cabinet/counter top lighting in your kitchen planning.
