Living Room Arrangement

last modified: 11 years ago

I am having a difficult time envisioning an arrangement for our sofa and television in our new house. The living room has an odd layout, with only one solid wall. It seems obvious that the sofa should go against this wall, but then I'm at a loss as to where the television should go. This is the only living room, so I don't have the option of putting the tv in a different location. I've attached some photos of the living room from various angles; any suggestions or recommendations are much appreciated!

It almost seems like this room should be the dining room....with the patio door.. It the dining room an interior room?

i cannot tell the size...but could the TV go to the right of the patio door with the sofa floating and facing it? Or would this block movement?

If you notice the arched "doorway" in the first photo, that is where the dining room is, and it's pretty small. We are putting hardwood flooring before we move in, on the entire first floor. I think this will help the rooms flow a little better, but I do think I will need to do some sort of floating situation with the sofa. I don't really see any way around it.

Are you going to placing a dining table in there as well? Or are you foregoing that and just using the space as a living room?

The dining table will go in the dining room area, so it won't be in the main living area.

Looking at your space, it would be nice to put your dining table by the large window and hang a pretty light fixture above.
Is there any way the dining room walls could be removed while you are installing your floors? It would open up the space and give you more options.
If not how about making the dining room a den for TV watching? Is there a window in the dining room?

SandyC, I have definitely considered removing those walls. In fact, I want to redesign the whole layout, because it just feels so weird to me. However, I think that will be a few years down the road. Yes, there is a window in the dining room.

Love ACM layout, but realize your space is very small, not at all like the spaces shown. I know she was snowing you how to float furniture and place your TV. You will have to be extremely careful when purchasing your furnishings to take measurements and make sure everything is to scale.
A small streamlined sofa, and two chairs (not a matching set) will work. Stay away from large overstuffed sofas with big arms and of course a large overstuffed sectional will not work.

SandyC, that is a great point about the size of the sofa. Unfortunately, ours is an overstuffed leather sofa, which is part of my dilemma. I'll have to think about replacing it...although it is practically part of the family, haha.
