If you paint the wood pieces black - and I think that is an excellent suggestion, you have many more options for the wall - you can go a bit more red than only rust / orange . . and I think you would like that better .. you probably still want to stay on the warm side of red.

You could also go more taupe - look at bm taos taupe, so you don't have to commit to an accent color with the wall .. . and you'll have more flexibility long term.
