Formal living room needs love

I have a typical colonial where there is a formal living area on the first floor. It's a decent size room- longer than it is wide with an opening to the dining area. Need some advice on how to create the right flow and divide up the room better. It just doesn't feel right as we have it. Any design/layout thoughts welcome! Also looking to purchase more pieces for the room. Perhaps a long sideboard to use as a bar area... Was thinking under those pictures at the far end?

Two thoughts:

--Float your sofa so that its back is to the entryway.

--Turn the coffee table so that it is parallel to the sofa.

--Face the chairs across from the sofa towards the corners. Place the floor lamp behind the chair nearest the window.

(Alternatively, get a small round or square coffee table and create your conversational grouping by keeping the sofa where it is but bring over your second chair so that it faces the matching chair with the new coffee table in the middle. Push the dog crate, if you must keep in in that room, to the corner of the wall where it is now.)

--Move one of your étagers by the doorway. Move the second étagere into the dining area.

--Move the dog crate to the corner where the chair is. Then it won't be the first thing you see when you enter the living room or have to walk around it.

--Think about getting some nearly ceiling to floor drapes in tan, white, and an accent color or just a solid pretty color that goes with your furniture and rug--turquoise, blue, yellow???. Hang them very high and have them flank the window.

--Don't add more pieces. The room has plenty going on. If you need a bar area, get a small bar cart and set it up in a corner of the dining room.

Perhaps you could try putting the sofa under the 2 pics. Put the wall units together on another wall. Put the 2 chairs across from the sofa, to make a conversation area.

turn the run the other way - oops that might not work. Post a picture after re-arranging furniture. Thanks.

Another thought.

Leave sofa where it is. Add end tables and tall sleek lamps. I think total height for two should be 58-64 inches tall. End table should be about height of sofa arms.

Find a pair of modern chairs and place side by side perpendicular to sofa on dining room end of sofa in a neutral charcoal

Place Language chair with floor lamp and small table in corner opposite sofa nearest entry way.

Place console table or cabinet between bar glass cabinets. Find large striking modern art print to fill wall above console and between cabinets. Hang simple linen panels in the strongest color from the print at the windows and accessorize in that color. As you have gold in the area rug I think your curtains could be a yellow/gold tone and any other colors in the print can be used for pillows, but use gold/yellow color as predominant accent color.

Just another suggestion. Looking forward to Susans floor plan.
