How to decorate this area without little knick knacks

This is our great room where we spend a lot of time. I'd like to make the shelves look clean and sophisticated - not cluttered. We have a TV on the right side on top of the cabinet. Help with specific pieces that could be added on the shelves and on top of the left cabinet would be appreciated. Thank you!

Don't think in terms of "little knick knacks". Put items on the shelves that bring memories or adventures. Different sizes and shapes and even colors will add interest. Vary them on each shelf, but keep it simple per happyleg. I placed all my items on the shelves and looked at them for a day or two, then I would move a couple around. I think I did this for about a week, before I got the right arrangement that pleased me.

I guess you might need the ones on the right, then, for TV components and the like, unless you can pile them underneath. Otherwise, relatively uniform books or a smattering of large, interesting items that you really like.
