Hardwood Floors

I'm going to be upgrading my first townehome. There is existing hardwood in the foyer but I want to add hardwood in the kitchen/living room. Should I try to match the existing hardwood (we won't be able to match it exactly)for the other rooms or try a different species of wood for the other rooms?

I would have them all match ,even if it means taking out what is in the foyer and starting from scratch...your home will look cleaner,bigger and flow better if all floors are the same...better for resell as well

Is the existing hardwood solid or engineered? If it is solid you can get a species/plank match and do what you want re: colour. Solid can be refinished at a later date so that you can get all the floors to match re: colour/stain. This only works for solid hardwood.

If it is engineered you will want to go the extra mile and replace it so that you have a continuous floor throughout. Multiple woods can be difficult to deal with later on. Your resale requirements and personal budget will dictate which road you decide to go with.

Remember: engineered floors (hardwood, vinyl, laminate, cork, etc) are hard to find after 1 year. You will have more problems trying to "match" something in 5 years...unless you deal with it today.
