Is it mounted on the wood trim, I can't tell from the photo? If it is, it needs to be taken down. Have a handyman cap your electrical wires and patch the hole.

I think it's very strange to say the least.

I would just remove and patch, or change to a pot light.

How about 3 small puck lights? It shouldn't be difficult to run the wiring through the drywall and install them spaced apart evenly. Not sure how much space you have between your moldings or how large the opening is for your electrical box, but I'm sure you could find something that would cover the box and fit.

If the light is truly on the molding, haven't heard back from OP, just remove, but don't put anything else there!

I think You are on the right track to remove it. If you don't need extra lighting in that area, I would just patch it up. It would really open up your sight lines. If you do need light, you can always take your photo to a lighting store for assistance. I'm sorry I can't really help in that regard. Good luck

Truly awful. What makes people do crazy things like this? How about some super small recessed or track lighting? Might be nice if kids are going to sit there and do homework. Or do you ultimately think about opening it all up?
