In general, you'll need a place to sit (a bench if it's just to use while getting dressed, or a comfy place to sit and read/watch tv). You'll need some sort of dresser, which can also double as a tv stand if you're putting a tv in the room. You'll need night table(s). You'll need a mirror - preferably full-length. You'll need bedside lamps and more (something next to a comfy chair, at least). Make sure there's access to electricity so guests can easily charge their devices. Most people that age will want to use a laptop in bed, so keep that in mind. You'll need window treatments, and an area rug. Depending on your climate, a space heater or fan or both will be appreciated. If you have room enough, a suitcase stand is a very nice thing to have in a guest room.

Navy and white are great colors to start with. Pick one accent color. You can go with something blue-ish (turquoise, teal, green, lavender, etc.), or give it more "pop" with something on the other side of the color wheel (tangerine, coral, rust, etc.). I vote for more "pop", personally. Add the color in places like the rug, window treatments, extra pillows, throw blankets or lamps. Make sure to keep plenty of white so your colors stand out. Keeping the room to 2 colors plus white will give it interest without being too busy or fussy. Artwork on the walls can introduce more colors without causing a problem with the color scheme.

As a matter of fact, if you have or find art that you want in the room, start there and choose your other color for the room from the picture. Or do the same idea if you find a colorful rug that you love.

For a final touch, add some potted plants, unless your guests have allergies. Spider plants are easy to grow in almost any lighting condition, and according to many websites (I'm not an expert) they help keep the air quality high.

I think you've given me a guide I can take in hand to shop! Your suggestions are wonderful, I never thought about keeping lots of white in the room. I am one who is bothered by "too many things" in a room, so this will be quite helpful.
