I need help with my kitchen

I am contemplating changing my tile counter/backsplash with soapstone and white subway tile. Cabinets are a mellow pine and not sure if black and white would fit in. Also, thinking of painting the juniper cupboard a soft distressed black and leaving the yellow cupboard as is. The white center island table will be replaced with a Butcherblock island on wheels. Any and all ideas will be appreciated. Thanks, Connie

I like your cabinets--they're very pretty. I also like all your distressed/painted cabinets. That's a very clever way to bring more storage to your kitchen.

Are you thinking of black for the countertop? The only issue with that is that it can darken a room a lot so if you have any light issues, keep that in mind.

    Hi Connie!

Great space you get to work with. Our team loves the cabinet color but feel the black and white may clash against the other color themes in this kitchen. What color will the new butcher block island be?

You could replace the backsplash with a light cream shade, or if you would like the black like you had mentioned, you can add a diamond black tile alternating with the cream tiles. Distressed wood paneling is also a great idea to match with your kitchen theme. There are many different paint colors and shades of finishes for the furniture. We suggest focusing around a common theme of neutrals and going from there. Would you like more of a contrast with cream and dark woods? Or whites/creams to lighten up the feel with your pine cabinets? Would you like to bring out the browns - a mixture of stones can help achieve this look (see below) Then you could maybe stain both of the hutches either a light cream to match or a very dark brown. Good luck on your project! We have included some images for inspiration!

I think the look is fine, but I'd sure hate to see you get rid of the contrasting color cabinets (although changing the emerald to black or some blue is nice too), which give your kitchen a lot of character! Maybe if your butcherblock island is painted some color too, it will all seem coherent and fun.

Here's one that was just posted, which is another good example. Also, and excuse to note that under-cabinet lighting will help keep everything from getting too dark (and making working spaces brighter too) -- it's gotten cheap and easy to add.

Someone asked about the butcher block island...here is a picture and I was thinking about painting the base a washed out black or whatever color I painted the juniper green cupboard. I am getting the vibes that black and white may not be the color for this kitchen. This has been the hardest decision....I want something plain and simple but yet "pops". I can't believe what wonderful responses I have been getting....but still don't have a handle on it yet. Thanks.

My thoughts- Paint the juniper piece white to tie in other white elements in the room. Backsplash doesn't bother that much, subway could be nice. Silver cabinet knobs would help modernize. Overall I would simplify visually (instead of adding), lots going on. Good luck! :)

I think I would paint the juniper cabinet the same yellow as the armoire/hutch, so you are reducing the amount of colors and opening up tile choices - I would stay away from black and white and continue with a softer feel. You could paint the base of the butch block a soft green, as well as the corner cabinet with the galss inserts and match up with green subway tiles. With cream colored soapstone counter, I think you'll still have a modern update which I think you are looking for, but in keeping with the style of your more rustic kitchen.

As I was flipping through other people's design dilemmas I saw a post W. Brown posted for a women having trouble updating her kitchen and I really liked what I saw. If I decide to use this scheme (subway tile in some sort of cream color for backsplash and soapstone for counters) what should I do with the juniper green hutch. Help!

I think you were on the right track with the distressed black. It looks as though it has a wooden top so it would be the opposite of your cabinets and soapstone counter tops.

I'd go for a cleaner look. Maybe a white mosiac backsplash tile to elevate the light in the room. I think black would make the room look smaller and darker.

the era you are trying to replicate, and the farmhouse style. would have been no back splash, white tile a low shelf, or wainscot. even just exposed wood. so white subway would be a good choice.

I love your style aesthetic. Soapstone does not always have to be black, black. Choose where you will be purchasing it to look at the various colorings they have. Sometimes has deep green or off-white streaks. That should be your first decision. Go for the backsplash next. I would definately go w/ an off-white or a butter yellow rather than a white, white. Have it installed in the simple running bond horizontal pattern in a matte or a pillow rather than a shiny finish. Install the under cabinet LED lighting next.

Choose the color for the hutch to the left of the sink next (perhaps a color close to your soapstone choice). Keep your lovely yellow piece the way it is and I like your choice for the butcher block cart as it will go with the cabinets. Change your hardware to an oil rubbed bronze cup handles for the drawers & knobs for the doors. Your existing sink & appliances are going to all go with everything. Enjoy.

So much good advice...keep it coming in. I want to hear your ideas.

I think soapstone would look awesome in your kitchen , I think if you can install it with your existing backsplash would look good.

consider flipping it to the wall the smaller hutch is on now, and paint white and distress.

Hi Flair, unfortunately I can't flip the 2 cabinets. The green one is attached to my other cabinets and would be costly to unattach. I think you suggested white because of the center island table???? Correct me if I am wrong. That table is going and I am using a butcher block island in which I will paint the base the same color I do the green cabinet. The two islands are the same size (except this one is taller) even though this one looks smaller. You've got some good ideas. Thanks.

can you sand down the cabinet and paint it a lighter color, the green really will stand out i think with your new look.

Dandinsky , I love the idea of the soapstone counter, cream subway tile, and refinish the green cabinet with the distressed black. And using the black for the base of the butcher lock island. Love your yellow cabinet!
