I don't think the banquette would look right in front of the door so I would suggest putting it on the wall with the small cabinet.

we use that slider to go out to backyard often..table in the middle makes it hard to go out that way, same if I put banquette where cabinet is..Is it a general rule that a round table will take up less room or will chairs around it leave less

How many people do you regularly need seating for?

2 usually but I do have dinner with 4 and a holiday or two with 6...Always a great time but a little cramped..you should see Thanksgiving almost comical..can almost get turkey from oven with just a reach ; )

Does the right side of the slider slide open and is the left side fixed or vise versa?

Have you tried putting the table under the mirror, the cabinet that is under the mirror where the wheeled cart is and the wheeled cart either at the end of or against the bar where the table now is.

I like your table and chairs but they are too large for that small space. How many do you usually seat? Would it be practical to replace this table with a small drop leave table that is intended to seat two?

Your kitchen very much resembles the one in my brother-in-law's three bedroom, bath and a half, ranch style home. They have a formal living dining room combo in the middle of the front half of their home. They have a den with a fireplace on the other side of the center wall from the kitchen area. Even though their center wall is a weight bearing wall, they could, by leaving some studs to which additional support would be added to form posts and by adding horizontal beams, remove much of the wall and combine the den and kitchen into a family room with arches in between. Aside from cost, I cannot understand why they didn't do this.

The only practical alternatives I can think of are:

... widen the bar to act as a bar at which two people could eat and remove the table and chairs altogether and/or

...put a roof over and turn a part of that back deck into a sun room to be used as a dining area, leaving the slider in place.

Also, no, do not put a rug (dust and smell collector and/or trip hazard) in this small space making it seem even smaller.

Remove the two chairs that are scwished between the counter and the sliding door. Place the on either side of the banquet (if they fit there) and m9ve the table flush with the counter.

wow,and yes you had it right in the 1st sentence. right side opens left is stationary..always have wanted to put table to right..my next project change to some kind of door large,single that opens out if possible on right half wall where left side of slider is with window above banquette to left with round table..which brings me back to original question. No banquette going down bar/counter and coming over the left of slider?? your brother in laws house sounds bigger.we have considered 1/2 wall or opening but would just open up to my small livingroom..(previous posts) No formal dining room..ok with small at this point in life just want storage and function..not always easy for the nostalgic-hoarders..wrking on the de-cluttering

Looks like there may be room for a banquette on the wall across from the table without covering the slider. Then a table that has both sides that fold down and 2 chairs would look less cramped. I used an antique farm table like that for a long time. With its two leaves in and both sides up, was able to seat six easily. Or squeeze 7-8 in a pinch.

that's for all the advice, going to pull the trigger on some decisions..hopefully when I re-post pics you'll be impressed more than amused.

The table is too large for the space. I would get rid of some furniture in that space and add a table similar to the pottery barn Shane table (comes in various colors). The table has leaves that fold down and also has storage at bottom.

Keeping the table in the middle and not tucked to the side will make it looked less cramped and have a much smoother look with a round table. Be sure to not over decorate around the table because you will start to feel cramped again.

If you rarely need six chairs, find two of them a home somewhere else in the house. You have two storage areas in this small place. Try to consolidate the storage into one piece and put the table on the other side of the room where the buffet is now. Push the table up against the wall with a chair at each end and two on one side. The chandelier appears to dictate where the table should be placed, so a light fixture that is closer to the ceiling would take care of that and improve your view out the doorwall. Experiment until it is comfortable for you.

It's a less cumbersome 4-person table but can easily open for 6+ (pretty sure theirs seats at least 8). I would put a bench on the side of path to access the patio door. Then you can center the table under the light without it being in the way. I would also raise or replace your light. It seems a bit heavy for the space.

Buy a table that extends when you need it . Lose the buffet . Too cluttered . An open cart would look nice and would give the area a lighter look.

I would get a more narrow table and put it in the middle. Or, I would move the table over to the wall where the baguette is and since your light is on a chain, simply add a hook and move it so it centers over the table. Many sliding doors can easily be flipped so they can open from the opposite side - if your does this, change it so it opens from the left and your traffic dilemma is solved also.
