Help me pick a sofa (rolled arm ok?)

last modified: 10 years ago

Hello - My current couch and loveseat need replacing, and I would like to ask all of you about which sofa/chair combo I should choose. I have pictures of them below.

The first contender is 2 cushion sofa and matching chair. They're available in both full-foam or down wrapped foam cushions at $1500 and $1800, respectively. I don't like the tacks and worry that this style will become dated quickly. The salesman says you can't get rid of the tacks so I'd have to live with them.

The 2nd contender is the sectional, but I'd be getting it as a 3-cushion sofa. This one is only available in down wrapped cushions and is on for $1900. I think the arms are a bit dated.

They're both extremely comfortable with a high back and deep seating. Those were the key ingredients for me.

I've attached pictures of my house as well. Obviously, my decor runs a bit classic (? well, at least not modern) however, I *do* like scandanavian modern decor and would like to add some modern pieces in, as budget permits. The harvest table stays though.

So I guess my questions are:

1. Do these sofas work with my current decor? Which one should I pick?

2. Are these sofas dated or tacky in any way? (I'm ok with 'boring')

3. Would I be able to incorporate more modern pieces into my decor? Modern coffee table, side table, secretary, sofa table, for example.

4. Do you have any opinion on down-wrapped foam vs. straight up foam?

4. What fabric should I pick? These are my main TV watching couches, and I've got kids. Currently, kids are not allowed to eat on the couch. Dog isn't allowed on couch either. However, grime will accumulate. The cushion covers CAN be removed on both, so perhaps drycleaning every now and then would work, and I could get a lighter colour? Or should I get a navy? Ahhhh! I just don't know and I spent an embarrassing amount of time at the showroom today trying to pick a colour!

PS: House faces north. Big windows let in a lot of light but very cold light, so greys give me pause.

Fabrics:

Grey or navy?

Linen colour or tealy-grey?

My house:

Thank you!

I think the sofa with coordinating chair is a more "upscale" look than the sectional, but I can see why you'd like the sectional for the room.

I would pick choice two. You will be getting it in the sofa version, not as a sectional?

Are the walls white? You can go in any direction. I'm not sure about dry cleaning. Is that what the label says?

Light colors can show the dirt more than darker. Is there a taupe? Do you want another print? What are your favorite colors?

I think the style of the second one goes better with your other furniture. Do you have plans to paint? Add drapes? Art? I'd lean toward the grays/blues.

    Hi there,

The linen colour definitely has a pink undertone. I don't like pink so out goes that possibility.

yes, I'd be getting the sofa version of the sectional, and the matching chair. The sectional is all they had in their showroom.

Though not my favorite colors right now, the colours I've liked consistently for sofas over the years have been navy and cream. So maybe navy is the way to go, but it is so dark! Do you think navy is too dark for this room?

The arms ARE low, but juuust high enough to prop a pillow. Yes, we'll be doing a lot of lying down on this couch.

Actually, I'm not sure you can dry clean the cushion covers..all I know is that they zip off, so I just figured they would be cleanable. I think the fabric swatches say WS on them.

The room is painted BM cloud white and that's how it'll stay. I had not planned on adding drapes...I thought it looked OK without them, but hey! Maybe in the future I could.

I don't know what to do for art...I thought I would start with the couch. But maybe I should have a clearer idea of the art before I pick a style of couch?

    thank you for your replies!

My all time favorite lounging sofa had rolled arms and the arm covers that came with them were nearly invisible. I think I prefer the grays and blues with your light colored walls. Probably easier to keep clean.

Of the two, I would choose the second one. I also prefer the down wrapped foam for the cushions. I can't really see the fabric choices very well, but would go for a mid-tone with possibly a subtle pattern/weave/texture-especially with kids. I think navy might show everything.

Second sofa and I like linen if it is in fact not a pinkish shade. I am hoping that is just color distortion on the screen.

I love the first one. It has a nice clean look. However, the second will go well in your home. I'd go with whichever is going to be more comfy for you and your family. I like the gray and the navy. No help there

I'm also sofa shopping to replace the current. Went to look yesterday. Re the two choices: if you plan to add modern vs traditional things in the future, go with the square arm sofa. That's the updated look.

I also have a roll arm sofa. Thing with those is they never go out. But with sectionals, I think another arm style looks more upscale.

The two choices are very different directions.

The second sofa is classic and will go with anything and keep its lines over time.

I know aesthetics are important, but comfort should come first and the second one looks like it would be more comfortable. It's also the best fit.

I like the first one best but either will look lovely in your home. I love the navy!

Thanks! Do you think navy will show dirt, as lizbeth says?

I think everything shows dirt in one way or another so I would not worry to much. I have velvet Tealy grey colored sofa and side chair if you want to see how the color works as an option. If Navy had been a choice when I purchased I would have in a heartbeat. I have navy leather wingback chairs and they show no more lint or dirt than my other pieces.

Hi roarah - how do I see your tealy gray sofa?

I soft grey blue and they have that option for the first sofa but not the second.

I've got to go back and sit on them again, but I'm not looking forward to batting away the sales agents!

It is photographing much lighter than in real life... But the chair and front sofa are a teal/grey velvet and the far is a bit lighter version in linen.

The rolled arm seems more consistent with the things you have now, but the squared arm would seem to lend itself more easily to modern additions you say you would like to try. But it has the nailheads and you say you don't like them -- so do you really want to live with them day in and day out? The nailheads up on the top of the arm is a current and trendy detail. I like it on some pieces, but you could wind up feeling it looks dated where the rolled arm will only risk looking worn or faded over time. It's a classic style.

As for color, I like grey, but I would like more color in there, so I would favor the navy for either style. I would shy away from the grey for the rolled arm. Can't put my finger on why, but the idea isn't working for me. If you do grey, would you go for a monochromatic look -- all black, white and grey with a few color accents?

I agree with you, lascatx, the sofa doesn't feel right in grey. Grey seems better for more contemporary or modern furniture.

I really don't like the nailheads on the squared arm sofa. I thought I could will myself to like them, but no.

I ended up getting the rolled arm couch and a 1.5 seater chair. The couch I'm getting in beige and the chair I'm getting in navy. This particular set comes with 7 pillows and the fabric on those is set by the manufacturer and I have no say (kind of good).

Thanks for your help! Below are my fabric choices.
