Something is eating my Iris rhizomes . . !

I went out this morning to check my two Iris gardens, and noticed that something, a critter of some sort, has been taking chunks out of the tops of my Tall Bearded Iris rhizomes! I thought they were toxic, so I was shocked to see this. Does anyone know about this problem ?

I have had gophers gnaw the rhizomes. Unfortunately they weren't toxic!

In fall, voles gnaw my iris rhizomes when they're bulking up for winter. To help prevent this, I fan the iris and clear away other perennials so they have no cover. Spraying the rhizomes with stinky stuff (Deer Stopper or some such critter deterrent) helps also.

There are chunks being taken out of the rhizomes. I don't know if an Insect is doing this or a Critter is doing this. I was advised to put COMET cleanser on the affected rhizomes, which I did. I will check again tomorrow morning and see if any new iris rhizomes have been chewed on. At this point, I don't know what I'm dealing with yet. This is definitely not Iris borer problems. I will try using Cayenne Pepper too if I have to .
