Yes. Most if not all orchids are grown in pine bark nuggets. I would pick the medium size, about 1 inch each.

I grow most of my epi orchids mounted on cork or directly to trees . Those that are in pots I use crushed lava rock. The BIG problem I've had with pine bark is that it rots very quickly as well as holds too much water long term .

They will definitely benefit from being outdoors as long as the weather holds.. I usually get daily rains during summer so need something that drains quickly hence the lava rock . It does have the disadvantage of drying too much during winter so need to supplement . But far easier to add water than take it away?? lol gary

I don't really have a shady place to put them yet. I have some rather large granite gravel I found when trying to dig up a palm tree. I believe it was once a rock garden, because there were also lots of larger limestone rocks in that area. I'm going to use it as a place to park my rain barrel, so I'll dig up a bit of the smaller pieces of that gravel and add some pine park.

Deb, like Gary said bark by itself will hold water too long and most Dends like to dry betwwen waterings. That’s why many orchidists don’t use it or use it as a part of a mix, typically mixed with sponge rock (large), lava or clay pellets and some charcoal.
