I think just painting it white with a new roof will look great!

The metal roof will give it a Florida Key west feel which is very cool. I would search that look on this site. You will find some great exterior details and color schemes. Good luck it is a great looking house..

I love the barn red color choice you made. I also live in a barn red home. You might want to accent the dormers with a contrasting neutral in a shake siding for added interest. I think you should consider replacing your front door with something more compatible with your barn look. It currently looks too Victorian and formal to me. Metal roofing color could also be red or a similar shade to the shakes you might choose. I'm thinking a sand color.

marshadraskovich I did not like the front door either. We replaced it on Monday but I haven't had a chance to take new pictures. Thank you for the shake siding idea, that would break it up a bit.

I do not think I would go red. With the front of the home...I feel it would accentuate the roofline/the whole front could get boxy, "solid" looking. I like Dar's colors and pics...those would be timeless and classy.

Thanks Dar and Jayme. Do you think it matters that it is t-111 siding right now? We would not be able to replace the siding for awhile so a little nervous that that timeless feel would be lost without new siding?

So u are not planning on a paint before u eventually re-side?

We are just painting right now. We only have the budget to put a new roof right now and paint.

Don't be afraid of red. It will ground the house with your heavy roofline. I do also love gray on your type of home. I can picture beautiful flower boxes under your windows top and bottom and white rockers welcoming guests.

What concerns me about red is that, depending upon the shade of your new roof..light or dark...two dark colors on the front, with that roof line could make it appear "block like"...Notice the pic I am posting with red and white..it breaks it up..The other pic..I like the color and the red door.

Love the front door. What do you think about shutters - a more barn style version than the typical louvered look.

Depending on how dark the new roof is..you could go with a grey, blue, white...

If you every have the budget to change the roof line over the door, that would be the first thing I would do. I'm loving the blue gray look above and think the door you picked would look great with it also.

HI -- I think you should do the red with lots of white trim and I love the new front door ! Have a look at this color Benjamin Moore " Rusty Nail " you might like it , and the house is big enough to take a strong color . If you do change the roof then a darker grey would look nice . I like the roof you have now . If it is in good shape then why change it . Lots of advice to go with a grey for the main color , BUT everybody does that so I think the red would be stunning . You could add a stoop or an awning over the front door , just to highlite the entrance and your new door. PS: You could widen the trim around the windows on the main level and on each side of the front door - in white .

With a roof that light, u could go with a darker color on the house...my suggestion would be to look over many pics with rooflines and roof colors similar to the one you are planning to put on. From there, I would decide which ones you feel look like what you want, whether it's red, grey, white, etc...You need to like it and be happy with it.

Thanks for all your help Jayme. It is hard to find comparing ones. Usually they are dutch colonials with beautiful detailing which our house lacks. But we could add it over time.

When painting an exterior you need to take photos of each elevation and then color them in alternate schemes in Photoshop. This "previsualization technique" is the only sure way to test before committing yourself to exterior colors. It's a minor expense compared to the cost of painting and the emotional strain.

I looked on Houzz at Dutch Colonials and saw a few...u can also look at other homes with similar roof lines to compare..you are very welcome and best of luck! Show us what u do...Some Craftsman style homes have simiilar front roof lines..Look at some of those too...

Hello, I live in the Netherlands and traditionally our barns where painted with black tar with white trims. Then again, you're not sure if you want to go dutch colonial.. The house does apply for a nice white-grey-red-scheme. I'd paint the frontdoor red to start with. And the main exterior light grey with white trims. I'm a sucker fot white trims. The roof looks great as it is though.

Like all the suggestions above. Another possible option - a darker colonial blue. We once owned a 1920 Dutch Colonial with a gray slate roof, with the gambrel roof and the dormers. We went with a colonial blue and it went well with the house, with the dormers blue and the door white. Like the suggestions for the gray and red as well. Whatever combination you go with, I would paint the dormers the same color as the exterior walls and the door a different color. Lovely house - good luck!
