Basil? I was thinking one of the mints.

The leaves look more minty but the spent flowers look very basil. Scratch and sniff would help.

It's basil but not one I've not grown before. It didn't have a tag at the nursery but the lady working there said it was "_______" Basil & I can't remember what she said before Basil. Maybe Thai? What is Thai Basil like?

The leaves when crushed aren't as basil smelling as the glossy leafed basil I have grown before. I looked at google images for various types of basil. If the images are labeled correctly, it's most like the photos shown for "Holy Basil". Leaves are green, not glossy & don't have purple veins, although the stems are purple. The flower spire is solid with continuous flowers, does not have spaces in between the flower sets. Anyone familiar with Holy Basil?

There are several different varieties of Holy Basil. I grow Tulsi Kapoor and this plant has light green foliage and spikier flowers.

Took a few more photos of the Basil in question...

    Questioning this Basil variety.

All these photos. I've posted are of the same Basil plant, that I'm trying to ID the specific variety.

I did notice the veins close to the stem are purple but they don't run through entire leaf. Leaves are mostly green.

Well the flowers do look like holy basil flowers, and holy basil does not smell or taste like basil (it's not a very pleasant taste, in my opinion, when eaten as is). Are the stems hairy at all? If they are, that's probably what it is.

Sophie, I went look at the stem. Stems are not smooth, does have a lite hair like stuff along the stems.

    hi TXCHX

I think this is a kind of holy basil which goes by the name Vana Tulsi. I have the same tulsi (holi basil) as the one pictured. in my plant the young stems are green and as the stems age they turn kind of dark, though leaves are always green. I tried to look up it's scientific name and came accross Ocimum gratissimum but am not totally sure if this is the accurate scientific name or not.

In India there are mainly 3 kind of basils that are considered sacred and of great medicinal value. These are Vana Tulsi, Krishna Tulsi and Rama Tulsi. The tip of Vana Tulsi leaf is more pointed while the other two have more rounded tips. Also Krishna and rama tulsi leaves are of same shape, the only difference is in color I believe. Krishna Tulsi is deep purple in color (stems, leaves and flower stocks) while Rama Tulsi is green.

I am attaching 3 pictures. the first two are of Vana Tulsi so that you can compare and decide if your plant is similar to mine or not. In the last picture I tried to show how leaves of the two holy basils (Vana and Krishna) differ in shape. I hope this helps.

The pictures got stretchy while uploading. Please click on the individual ones to see actual shape.

I'm growing Vana Tulsi a type of holy basil and these pictures look very similar to mine. I'll take pictures as this crop hasn't fully flowered yet but maybe you can compare if not rule out (i often think weeds are flower seedlings hahah)

naturisnspired_m(6b) & asia waka(5b) I really appreciate the feedback. I will have a closer look in the daylight tomorrow to see how the leaves & flowers compare to your photos.

I just trimmed these down to make some tea but these ones tend to get darker when they get older or when it's really hot by my observation. These were a late start so I don't think they will get too much darker. Hope that helps!

@asia waka, It's still in the 90 degree temperature range where I garden, so my "Holy Basil" (I think that's what it is) is still going strong. I love the flowers & the bees are very happy to visit but I'm not sure I will be using it to cook. Will save some seeds for next year.
