I see something tall and skinny. But what your should do is have an art date with your husband. Find an art school, art gallery, or a arts and craft fair, you and your husband have a date to the event and shop for what you both like. Hang it and you will have a beautiful piece of art in your home that brings back memories of a good time.

An impressionist painting will be difficult because they are often painted in a horizontal format. Maybe you will consider abstract paintings instead.

Is there a chandelier in the room?

Take strategic measurements of the FP with you so you don't get one the wrong size. I prefer art stay within the "visual" footprint of the firebox.

Thanks for the ideas. There is no chandelier, just recessed lighting and a ceiling fan. Yes, we have taken measurements of the FP so it would be proportional.

A beautiful space to work with..and yes a large canvas above the mantel would work well. This macro photograph of a tulip, printed in sepia tones on canvas, looks like it belongs right there.

Obviously not in these colours, but an idea

Yogi, you may hate me for this but; your room seems unbalanced to me...I can't see the whole room, although the sofa looks very cozy, it's cramped in the corner. The first thing I'd do is move the sofa and make the fireplace the central focus, centering the furniture to either side.
