Could this work?

Okay.... I am on a roll to get my living room done. I finally purchase the blue diamond rug, I had yellow as an accent color. (Need to find some pillows to tie it together... Gray modern couch is on the agenda.)

Could the below multicolor painting work? You can see the yellow ottoman in the middle photo... I also recently purchased a MCM coffee table (once I scotch guard my rug).

Thoughts?

The couch I want is similar to the one below.

Look for abstracts and florals to go with the geometric rug. Of course, solids always work.

Thanks Grover! Your pictures are so amazingly helpful! I'm not usually a floral person, but that is a good example of flora I'd enjoy.

Do you think a gray print would help tie in the wall color and my curtains? I may eventually paint the living wall color over but for now....

I would bring out that beautiful orange/coral color with navy pillows. I would also look on Etsy for some fab MCM style cushions. Best of luck.

Mark.... Would that work even with re yellow couch throw and yellow ottoman?

Where did you get that painting? Love it!

@Mariellen I found it at TJMaxx! I am heading to buy it today!

I never go there. Maybe I should! Thanks!

If you are referring to the ottoman's in your picture I think it would be fine. They appear to be a gold yellow. I know that yellow and blue ( the carpet ) go together nicely but if it was my room I would not use yellow as my accent color. The orange/coral and blue combination is so rich. Best of luck !

@Mariellen you can get some great things for affordable prices (we are a single income household and I like to update every so many years and it lets me do that)

Thanks Mark! I will see what I can come up with.

Just a coincidence but my sister married a Beach. You don't often hear that last name.

Really? From what part of the world? Sometimes we run into people who have been related to us way down the line. My husband is from the Washington state area.

That would be great. It will become the focal point of the room with all the color!

And take attention off the TV right? That's really the only place my tv is gonna work until I get some of those built ins squared away....
Would these be complimentary? Maybe a tall plant on the top of the mantle? Too much? I need to clean the clutter off and make it minimal.
    Found something orange Mark!

There's not enough space to put anything tall on top of the mantel. Vary the heights of the things you put up there and don't go taller than about 3/4 of the space.

    Thanks @Groveraxle!
I enjoyed the look of the plant, but I prefer real so I may look into something else. I will also measure the area and see what the height is so I can adjust accordingly.

I found me a gem today.... Once my company leaves... I can put it all together and have some input on how to move stuff around.

Still working on throw pillows! Anyone have any suggestions on how to mix prints, etc?
It really frustrates me and I usually leave the store empty handed. I want a good balance. Since my rug is blue printed... Should I stay away from another blue print? Maybe just solid and bring in other colors with a pattern? What about scale of patterns? Is there typically a rule of thumb? My rug (I think) is a medium print....

Great score on the table, BTW!

Thanks Grover! You are ever so helpful.
That article was GREAT! Thanks for sharing Grover.
Okay.... I had to shift some things around (color wise).... The painting wasn't working for me in the living room. I think I found another place for it. How do these pillows work with this rug?

Any help.... This stuff makes me bat$@*# crazy.

And I have a succulent framed art by my lamp.

The plain and striped pillows are fine. Ditch the black and white geometric: it's too close to the pattern of the rug. The succulent picture looks like it will work well with the striped pillow, but if you're going to introduce that green, bring in a couple more accessories in the same color to tie it all together.

    Thanks Grover! I found this...

I got the black and white! Luckily, if I don't like it... I have an upstairs room that is going to be a funky, fun, family room. I can move stuff around pretty easily!
That's the great thing when you have to fill spaces. Things can start to swap out!
You think a potted succulent/aloe? Or something like that on a glass coffee table would help bring another green element?

A potted succulent would be exactly right. The color will be perfect and they thrive on neglect!

Ok. I almost bought a black and white tiny checkered print. I will mess with it a bit and see. Will be delivered this week so I can see in person. And post an update.
    Okay.... So far....

    Now what?

Do I need two matching chairs facing the TV? Everything is so far apart but I'm working on it....

Should I incorporate a small chaise sofa to nestle the round coffee table? I'm planning on putting two small end tables flanked on whichever couch goes on the star wall..

Should I swap the brown leather and the MCM sofa?

Should I bring the sofa off the wall and add a console behind? My furniture has been significantly downsized (size wise) and now I can see the scope of the room!

I would love it if your new rug would fit the front feet of each sofa onto it. Just paint the upper scallop to match the wall. You at least need to pull the brown sofa away from your drapes some so they can hang softly. Move the two stars & the center hanging down to be placed about 6 inches above the new sofa. I do love the new coffee table.

    Thanks Sandra!

I did have a rug previously that ran under BOTH. One ginormous (mostly irritating) problem. Even with a rug pad and going under my couches, two dogs and two rambunctious kids... Would constantly have it gathering and moving all up under the couches.

It was a daily battle to move the rug and pad back into place. And I just dusted my hands of that mess. It drove me nuts. I'm hoping when I get two more pieces (hopefully chairs facing the TV) it will come closer together. I'm probably ridding that brown leather one altogether. (Eventually.) I may move the couches tomorrow and see how it looks. I don't like the high back couch against the window. Kind of drives me crazy.

I also got that Danish end table this weekend! ☺️
  • 10 years ago

    That is really great.

Oh! And I LOVE the tables you posted. What are those tables called similar to the silver and gold one? With only one side connected? TV side table? Chair side table? That's exactly what I need.

Those tables are usually called C tables because they look like a letter C.

    C table!

No more sofas. The living room arrangement looks nice, but doesn't look functional. If you keep the two sofas facing, I would pull both of them off the walls. Center the coffee table on the fireplace, then pull each sofa to within 18" of the edge.

I'd like to see you try one of the sofas facing the fireplace. This would be more functional for actually watching TV, and it would form a sort of entry corridor from the front door. You could put the taller sofa opposite the window, then perhaps add a chair and end table to the right of the fireplace.

I will try to swing that around Grover! Tomorrow perhaps and snap a photo. Thanks for the suggestions.

I think my couches are too long for right in front? That wall off the entry totally screws it up. I wish it wasn't there. Why I was suggesting two matching chairs?

My brain was originally planning to get two matching chairs and a bigger, comfier chair for the right of the fire like you suggested. Just haven't gotten there yet!
Okay. Took your advice and I switched it around a little.

The more I move that brown leather couch. The more I hate it. Lol

It's just so so so ginormous!
Smaller furniture will allow me to integrate more pieces, I think. Idk how I feel about it straight in front of the fireplace? Should I slide it in front of the window? The taller couch looks better with the wall hangings. I will have to figure out the furniture arrangement as I gather more furnishings. But that brown leather is out of here the minute I can.
And could a tall glass cabinet work for the entry? Or is that weird?

A tall glass cabinet where in the entry?

A couple of questions: in the last arrangement, is there enough walk space between the new sofa and the entry wall? And will watching TV be more comfortable with the sofa facing the TV?

In the last arrangement, it looks like you can get at least one chair, possibly two if they're small, in front of the windows.

Okay.... The cabinet would go where the gray console is currently so I can move that back into the kitchen/dining where it was originally. All my crap is lingering on my counter island.

Also, no, with the brown leather couch on the long wall, there is no room to walk on either side of the tan MCM sofa. The wall coming off the door screws up every ounce of a sofa sitting facing the TV unless it's going to be a couple of chairs... Or an apartment sofa?

What if I put the tan couch where the brown leather one is? Two chairs where the tan sofa is facing the TV and a chair and ottoman by the window? Or tan under window, two chairs facing and chair with ottoman on long wall?
This is the cabinet... It's 50" tall. I've just never really seen anything entry tables taller than roughly 30" or hip/waist height. Didn't know if it would be odd?
    Kathryn,
A new perspective. Tan sofa looks great floating. Find a new home for the leather sofa. It's out of scale for your other items. Leave wall blank except for art, maybe a console table under the art & your yellow ottoman(s) under the console table. I would paint the fireplace wall a dark color, even black. That would hide curvy trim and make the TV less conspicuous. Then find an odd number of candles or glass objects all the same color to put on top of bookshelf on right side. Use very simple books or boxes or baskets on shelves under. Try Crate & Barrel or CB2 for fun pillows that would enhance your new Great! Modernish pieces. You're on to a great room!
Also, love the cabinet for the wall behind the sofa. Find something to put in it to bring out colors in your art piece.
    Thanks!

Couple of things have come of the painting.... I couldn't find a place where it really went well. I have a house to fill with stuff so I moved some things around. The painting is going to hang in my room (I have a coral quilt)... And gray geometric pillows. The yellow blanket and storage ottoman went to our FROG (or bonus room over garage as some people call it).

I am trying to purchase the bookcase.
Haven't yet! It was just a piece I was eyeballing.

As I incorporate more, I will keep posting for advice.

That cabinet is great and I think it can work on the entry wall.

I like the idea of the tan sofa on the wall, two chairs facing TV, and chair and ottoman in front of window. Just make sure the chairs are small enough that you have space to enter the living area.

I like this combination of art pieces for my living room. Is it too matchy matchy with my rug? I won't hang them. Just kind of lay them similarly, resting against the wall on one side of the built ins. I am gathering a few decorative things for the shelves (not too much)....

Any ideas for a centerpiece for the coffee table? Idk what to go with. (I am not a fan of dishes with balls in them, just FYI.) And I am pretty dumb. I have kids and dogs and what to put stuff in reach. Guess I like to live dangerously.

The art is not too matchy-matchy. For the coffee table, a coffee table book: unbreakable. Find something with pictures the kids will like.

Thanks Grover! Im gonna head back and grab that art. And I know the perfect book.
