Basil Plant not doing good

last modified: 10 years ago

Hello everyone,

I've made a really bad mistake with one of my basil plants. I've been growing it in one of those self watering pots, of which I've had no prior experience with. The plant has been doing great until recently it's gone yellow and many leaves have started dropping. The top of the plant is bushy and healthy, but the lower sections have almost no leaves. I eventually realized that all the water I have been giving it (every 2-3 days) has just been sitting in the reservoir at the bottom.

I feel really silly for letting a plant very sensitive to over watering grow with essentially no drainage(I do tip it over every now and then though to empty the reservoir). The roots are still a normal color from what I can see, but I've got to do something fast. I've made a few punctures in the bottom of the pot in attempt to drain it, but I'm planning on either transplanting it or taking the reservoir dish off, packing it with soil, and making some holes in it for drainage.

I especially feel stupid because I have grown basil several times in other types of pots with normal drainage and they have always been fine. Any suggestions for what I can do to save it would be greatly appreciated.
