If pears are anything like apples, they should freeze well. I just slice my apples, dip in lemon water to prevent browning, drain and freeze. If your pears aren't ripe, then maybe you might have to cook and sweeten them, or let them sit on the counter or in a brown bag to ripen.

Barb - while this is not what you are asking, I thought I'd mention it. I learned while working with an orchard that pears actually ripen off the tree. If I remember correctly, some varieties benefit from cold storage too - like refrigerate the pears for a week or so, then take them out and leave them on the counter. They should soften up and ripen to a wonderful, juicy pear. This link might help.

Agree with ekgrows. The pears should soften if left on the counter if you want to eat them fresh. Of course freezing them as they are (using instructions in the link Dave gave) will cause them to be softer once thawed.
