I want to mention a few important features that someone shopping for a custom built deck should require:

Seamless plank design:

If
the deck is less than 20ft long in one dimension then ask your
contractor for one piece planks to eliminate seams as much as possible. I
often see custom built decks for high end rooftop gardens such as
Manhattan, NY penthouses or for luxury NY City townhouse backyards and
they have several small pieces of wood tacked in place that can move,
warp, mismatch and then cause a tripping hazard or just annoying cheap
feeling.

I
often and almost always try to offer our clients a one piece deck plank
to eliminate seams. The construction is much faster, waste is reduced
to almost nothing and the look of the deck speaks for itself.

Proper fasteners:

We offer stainless steel fasteners as an option. This makes for an as
new look for several years after the deck has been built but also will
make removal of the deck planks easier since the fasteners do not
oxidize or rust. The stainless steel fasteners (deck screws) are less
prone to breaking if they need to be removed and can even be reused.
Traditional screws may eventually rust, weaken and break off especially
when someone tries to remove them.

Wood preservative or stain.

A
good quality oil based stain should be applied and will definitely add
years, even a decade of life to whatever type of materials are used for
decking. We do not often work with composite decking materials however
can if requested.

Proper strength:

use
the correct size structural lumber and spacing. Some contractors like
to widen the spacing of floor joists to 24" but we always use 16" on
center to avoid flexing and to make the deck feel more solid but more
importantly: safe and strong!

We do not built dozens of decks per year. NY Plantings prefers to only
build decks, custom wood fences etc. as part of complete landscape
projects however we will be happy to consider any custom deck
