Is this custom construction?

The construction of my cabinets doesn't look "custom" to me. Workmanship appears to be of poor quality. Of course my "luxury home builder" thinks otherwise. Am I crazy?

Custom doesn't mean quality, it just means that is was built to your specifications. Only if your specifications got down to the level of workmanship that your pics is "custom" the problem. Otherwise, it is quality, craftsmanship, and integrity.

Thank you, Actually i feel the quality and craftsmanship is poor. Am I too picky?

Did your budget/timeline allow for a quality cabinet maker or were they working with some limitations?

This project started 1 year ago. Shouldn't that be more than enough time to build a kitchen of higher quality? The cost to me $$$ in Houzz lingo and I'm getting less then $ quality. Just wondering if this is what the non visible construction should look like?

How does the visible stuff look?

I do have to say I admire his work in getting the "teeth" int the dentil crown mldg to align. I can't say I have ever seen that approach before, ugh......

Thanks for all the comments, Any advise to assist with yet another discussion with builder. added exterior pictures but only have close ups. I've attached the drawings for the area in pictures. That "great dentil crown" is on the corner ovens. Builder says I'm wrong, when I say hey that's not right. all help is greatly appreciated.

looks to me to be locally made which the folks on here howl to the moon as the only way to go.. Custom to most commenters on here means the company is to small to make a book of what cabinets are offered and the way they can make them special which is how the big companies do it!

Most of the pictures you present are not visible when installed.. What matters most at this point is what you see when you use them...

I am not a fan of particle board construction. The La area where I live is saturated with local cabinet makers.. They send people to our showroom all the time for people to pick out what they like and then try to duplicate it..

That seems backwards to me. You should be picking things out from their portfolio!

The pictures of the items you see have nice look...

David Scott.. Who howls to the moon that custom = local? I've read the exact opposite on GW- that getting custom cabinets from a local cabinet maker isn't always better than getting custom cabinets from a reputable custom cabinet line. I have no idea what GW posts you've been reading.

The 3rd picture - is that supposed to be supporting something? It looks tight in the corner but then starts to bow, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at. And yea, I guess it's important that stuff looks good from the outside, but if it's not supported on the inside properly it won't be looking or working very good for long.

are you referring to the picture of the Dentil crown? If so,this is the corner oven cabinet shown in the kitchen drawings. To bad it didn't turn out as drawn.

Custom is as stated above.Built to fit your needs and kitchen. Not off the shelf standard sizes and configurations. That being said,we have no idea if you paid 3K for a low budget set of cabinets or 20k for what was supposed to be high end or mid range cabinets.Without more info I can't give a better answer. The cabinets are particle board so I'm assuming there was a budget for lower end cabinets.

I strongly disagree with the comments about local cabinetmakers .It is a huge generalization.

Custom is NOT a synonym for quality. You can have high quality factory made and low quality custom made. Witness these photos. Custom just means made for you. Bespoke. That custom wedding dress can be from a local seamstress who does the equivalent of couture, or from a Phillipine sweatshop where you enter in your measurements online and pick from a laundry list of features to throw at it.

if this was supposed to be a Houzz level remodel, then it would be in the 100k level cabinet expenditure which I certainly hope was not paid for THAT

Good design is irrespective of the quality of the product installed. That is not good design.

    Is this custom construction?

Yes, if the cabinetry is made to measure. That is, if it was made to fit your space and without unnecessary 'space' fillers. And that is something that we can't tell you based on four random pictures.

That is all that 'custom' means.

I was referring to the one above the Dentil crown.

Partial board construction being low budget is also a generalization P C.

Lots of very high quality German and Italian companies use partialboard construction. It boils down to the grade of material and its finish - assembly.

while i agree that custom doesn't mean quality, it should mean at the least that it was built to your specs and in cases of good contractors, to maximize the qualities of your space. my kitchen was custom and although in many ways it's a good product, he didn't build to our space after numerous meetings and discussions and we basically had to build out our kitchen to accomodate the cabinetry.
