Generally, yes. But now Joanns is getting in more quilting weight fabric compared to past years. You can find the heavier, sturdier fabric at Joanns by looking at the price. It will cost more and be labeled as quilting cotton. I found a color I needed for backing there and was surprised at how good it was after I prewashed it. I tend to buy mine only at quilt shops and at online quilting sources. So, just look at fabric both places and you will see the difference. Some people don't have a choice where they live. You just do the best you can.

I generally purchase all my fabric on-line and some in quilt shops. If your JoAnne's is one of the newer updated store it may have the better quality fabrics....so generally I'm agreeing with Linda. If you do purchase from Joanne's buy a manufacturer you know.. I'd also recommend looking at Missouri star quilt company, and fat quarter shop, although there seems to be hundreds of on lines stores to choose from....Hawthorne fabrics, intrepid thread, etc etc etc...

Yes, find the $12 a yard fabrics at Joanns. I just bought some and used it for the backing and it's just lovely. With sales and/or coupons, it's usually a decent price.
