Wasp ID

When we were in Greenville, SC last weekend, I opened the back door which had not been opened in a couple of months. Stuck between the door and storm door was a baseball sized blue grey ball of mud. Inside are what are what appears to be wasp larvae. I am familiar with dirt dobbers, but this looks nothing like any dirt dobbers I have seen. I brought it home and placed it in the green house in hopes that I will see the wasps after they hatch. Anyone ever seen a nest like this? The dirt is from a nearby creek bank wheras the soil otherwise is red clay.
