Thank you for the suggestions and the links. She has already taken the dog to a vet school. It is still too expensive for her family and she does not qualify for Care Credit or many other programs because she makes too much. Like when you are in school and you apply for a loan, but your dad makes too much money...even though he is just a working Joe and barely getting by. Sort of the same thing with their family. Anyway, thank you so much. I will pass the links along to her.

Has she requested a payment plan? Would that ease the financial burden?

I don't know about the vet school at the university she took her dog to, but the ones I have been to do not do payment plans.

Payment Plan at regular Vet?

Yes, indeed! My vet offers payment plans-one is able to make installment payments or "pay as you go". For the puppy vaccination plan, the total was divided into quarters and I paid a portion after each treatment. It sure went down a lot easier.

Forgot to add that there are discount days for vaccines, surgeries and teeth cleaning. The vaccination package was discounted and I could still get the discount with the installment payments.

Care Credit does not have maximum income ceilings. It's not a welfare nor a low income program. You are never denied for having too much income. It's just a credit card that is easier for those who don't have large incomes to get. The only way to be denied is if you don't make enough to pay them back.

You did not say she maxed out her credit earlier. Your post clearly stated it was because she made too much.

watchmelol, have got different versions from owner and from others involved in project. I gather that she is maxed out for credit, but makes too much to qualify other programs that help with vet bills.

Can you contact the local news? Sometimes they can get the word out. Or the humane society? Can they help?

It's been two weeks since these many suggestions have been offered. Have any been explored? If so, what was the outcome?

nannygoat18, She has explored every suggestion anyone has made to her. The vets do not do payment plans. They only told her about Care Credit, which she could not get. I just read the suggestion about contacting the local news and the Humane Society. Will pass those suggestions on to her. Different ones have given her lists of organizations that are supposed to help with medical bills. One of the gals trying to help raise the funds went through the lists and called each organization. No luck. Each organization has only very limited funds and could not help or are out of money, only helping people in their area, or not helping anyone at the moment, or the contact info. is no longer valid. So still looking for ideas.

Unfortunately, MANY pets are euthanized for that reason; owner cannot afford needed treatment. I volunteer with an animal rescue/shelter and our vets see this so often. Very sad.

I'm so sorry peabody. I was hoping for a good outcome. Mdin, I also volunteer and it's truly heartbreaking.

I do have some good news. Even though we were not able to raise all the money needed for surgery the dog has received some therapy and drum roll please.......just got word this morning that during water therapy all four legs moved. So even though the dog is not able to run around like normal it does have some movement. So everyone is very hopeful. But I was told once by a vet that once your dog shows signs of disc disease then be prepared because at some point it will have to have surgery. I can't speak for the vet of this person's dog, but I would assume they are saying the same thing. I haven't talked to the owner regarding this. But it is great news. And just because a dog goes down in their back is no reason to put them to sleep. This person's vet told them that was their option. There is always the carts or "doggie wheelchairs" as I sometimes call them. Dogs using these carts run around and play and have a good time. I can't understand why vets do not give that as an option. And people can get the plans on the internet and build their own, if the can't afford to buy one. Thank you all for being concerned and for your suggestions.
