Parsley and Lovage not growing indoors

I started some parsley and lovage herbs from seed indoors many weeks ago and everything was going well until they all developed long stems and just flopped over like they were dying. all the sprouts had no more than 2 stems and just wouldn't grow. Once they flopped over, I decided to pull most of them out that survived of the soil slowly and noticed that they were not rooting, in fact, they only had 1 root, so I put them in a clear glass with water and new roots started to appear. Is there something wrong with my soil? Is it because the pot is sitting on the sill in front of an open window? I gave them plenty of space in a 10 inch diameter clay pot with drainage, watering every few days. I used the same soil on Sweet Basil seeds and have several 1 foot tall plants in a small tiny pot.

How much light were they getting?

Most herbs will not thrive indoors unless grow lights are used. Without enough light they grow long and leggy as you describe.

I've had herbs that didn't have roots, but the problem mine had were these nasty bugs in the soil that were eating the roots. I used cold pressed neem oil and after a few applications they were dead dead dead! I have tried to grow lovage outdoors, it seems like a lot of bugs love lovage too, the leaves were being constantly eaten. I hope they can come back next year. Hope your seedlings don't have a bug or grub infestation, that can explain why they suddenly go all wilted because their root systems are being gnawed on.

they were getting the same amount of light as the basil plant. they sit in a window sil, facing a south west exposure with plenty o light and a few hours of sun.

Not even close to enough light for healthy seedlings. You may have managed the basil, but I'm sure they were leggy and not as healthy as could have been with proper conditions. It just seems worse with the parsley and lovage because they're taproot plants.
