Tear off asbestos siding or not?

I have asbestos siding. And just found out it's most likely there is old wood siding behind. No guarantee of shape or continuity of the wood siding. But I hate the asbestos. However I don't want to get into a nightmare reside project.

Tear it off (abated)

I'd cost it out. I don't think you can just take asbestos to the dump and you need to control any dust. One presumes the people who resided your house with asbestos did it for a good reason, so I wouldn't expect the wood to be in great shape. On the other hand, you'd have noticed serious rot.

Don't ignore the cancer issue. I spent the summer watching someone die of cancer he got from asbestos he was exposed to decades and decades ago. The ability to cure mesothelioma is pretty limited. If the chemotherapy doesn't kill you, it has a 50% chance of curing the cancer.

Is that where your electric meter was?

You should research it, but I don't think asbestos is dangerous so long as it isn't air-borne.

Can you afford to reside your house? If so, I would.

Abatement cost will be high, and the wood underneath likely needs to be replaced. you are probably best to just have it sided over the top of the asbestos.

I should mention i would get this done by a professional Abatement company. i'm more curious about what you'd do if it was your house if you had experience with asbestos on your property. thank you.

I have a house with asbestos siding, we plan to just have it covered with vinyl siding. To my knowledge the asbestos is the only layer on the house though.

HI -- I know I would feel better knowing that it is gone instead of just covered up . If you have to do new siding then might as well do it all properly .

If you don't mind the cottage-y look of the siding, just paint without disturbing (sanding, etc.) the asbestos and you should be good. Having it torn off is expensive and certainly not a do-it-yourself type of job. There are cement versions of the siding available for repairs, and, when painted, match pretty well. I have seen some very attractive houses with this siding, particularly if the paint colors were well-chosen.
