transplanting a shrub in fall

I'm always reading how fall is a perfect time to plant a tree, but don't see any mention of if it's a good time to transplant. I don't have access to any nursery in my remote area to buy a new shrub to plant, so I'm wondering if I can successfully transplant one now. I have a coppertina ninebark in a location I don't like and would like to move it. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd really hate to kill it by moving it at the wrong time.
