Need new printer

My old reliable Epson died last week and now I am getting a headache reading product reviews and specs. reminds me of those asking for help choosing a sewing machine. So much out there. One thing I would like is the ability to print on fabric for labels etc. Do any of you do that and what printer are you using? I don't need a lot of other bells and whistles.

Good job, Theresa. Electronics can get so complicated. Simpler is always better, to my way of thinking.

Theresa, I have an Epson WorkForce 645 that prints labels quite well. It's compact and has all the bells and whistles. I'm afraid most printers these days have much more capability than most of us will ever use. I think it was about $100. It takes style 126 ink cartridges, just in case your old one did too.

According to Epson website, that model is discontinued. I went to Staples this afternoon and bought a simple model which will be all I need. And the price dropped $40 from Monday when I looked at it to today's price. More money for fabric.

Glad you found something you like. If anyone else is looking for a new printer, I highly recommend the HP Envy 4500. It's the best printer I've had (and I've had a lot of printers), and so easy to use. After using it in my office for a while, I bought another one to use in my quilt studio. They only cost about $70, which I think is a great price for a print-scan-copy machine--and it also does reductions and enlargements.

I hate printer shopping. My biggest complaint is the cost of the ink! Glad you found one.

My only comment would be to be sure you can use a compatible generic ink supply as opposed to a proprietary one. I have an Epson printer that can only use Epson ink and I can only buy locally in an office products store with a hefty price. Even online at Amazon it's very expensive. I think I've bought enough ink to have purchased several printers. I will not be buying an Epson when it's time to replace this one.

Yes, they definitely suck you in with the cheap-cheap price on the printer then hit you with the ink cost.

Our printer is a Brother, chosen b/c it has separate cartridges for each color of ink. The salesperson insisted the printer would work if one of the cartridges was empty (we hardly ever print colors), but that is not the case. All four cartridges have to have ink. Plus we really hate the printer - it is balky and temperamental (not like my Brother sewing machines!). We keep talking about replacing it but haven't done it yet.

I had an Epson with separate cartridges and repeatedly replaced the colored ones because they dried up without my printing anything in color. I gave up on colored printers. I now own a Canon D480 laser printer. An added benefit - the difference in speed of printing is fantastic.
