Need Help with Gas Fireplace Exterior

The gas fireplace is installed in the kitchen/living room and I am stumped on how to finish its exterior, I'd like engineered stone to save weight. Firebox dimensions are W 52" H 651/2" D 231/2" the base is 3 1/2" from the floor, from the top of the fireplace box to the peak of the ceiling it's 72". I have an old barn post for a mantel not sure if I should use it and not sure if I should extend the stonework up the wall to the ceiling peak or if that would overwhelm the room which I definitely don't want to do. Dominant colors in the room are red birch floors, alder wood cabinets subtle patterned black honed granite counter tops, medium brown leather couch and solid neutral fabric chairs and off-white and gray rug. The walls are primed cream color to keep the rooms as light as possible. What colors or patterns would be most adaptable if or when furniture colors change?
