In a phrase: mass appeal!

If only 10% of N. Americans will purchase modern (I am in LOVE with West Coast Modern!!) that leaves 90% who will not. These designs are very difficult to mass produce. Mass production (cookie cutter housing) is a very easy way to churn out housing that is easy to sell.

Individually designed housing is expensive, time consuming and difficult to sell when the time comes to retail to the public. As beautiful as it is, it is difficult to "sell" open spaced living to a family of 5. Most people's furnishings just do not "fit" into such a modern space = more cost to the end user.

This is why most of the modern homes of today (West Coast Modern being the most recognisable where I live) are special designs using special architects who offer amazing products for a PREMIUM price.

Many of us, who love this style, have a hard time affording it. In Vancouver, the second most expensive market in the world, the average 4 bed bungalow (1950's build) is being sold for an average of $700,000!!! If the same home is a modern design = $1.4Mill - $3.5million!!!

Not an easy price tag!

BTW: BEAUTIFUL HOME!!!

Toronto, where i am is almost equally expensive a market and the costs are there for mass market as well, all the city fees, hydro installations and the rest.
If the number of people that love this house and the general style it represents were to buy this style of house it could easily be mass produced at less cost than what is standard here, the two floor, double garage brick home.
The savings by using stucco versus brick, less walls, less doors, no colonial trim, simpler flooring and so on add u to less costs. The fact that this home was built with ICM, insulated concrete forms, raised the cost over standard framing minimally but most was recovered by not requiring vapour barriers, batt insulation and so on.
If well planned and able to do full subdivisions in modern styling, they could be built cheaper and would sell extremely quickly.
