It is all individual pieces that you apply as one decal using the transfer tape overlay. In other words, there is no background. All you see is the cutout shapes, but you don't have to install the squares one at a time. I hope that helps!

How does it stick to the wall? Does it have adhesive on it or does it peel on and off easily? What if the wall has a slight texture?

It is peel and stick. It goes on and peels off easily. As long as the texture is no more than an orange peel type of texture it should stick just fine.
