I love the sofa and what a great window! I think the rug works with the sofa... What about updating the pictures on the wall?

This is a great space. Before driving yourself crazy w upholstery, consider a coffee table, some end tables with lamps, and some updated art on the walls. They don't all have to match...just make sure the scale is right. Also, make sure you can fit the front legs of your furniture on the rug. Tables and lamps will make the room feel a bit more cozy and functional with a place for guests to set down a beverage. Search photos on Houzz for spaces that inspire you. Consider consulting a decorator if you get stumped.

Please flip the cushions on your wing chairs so the upholstery pattern matches. Also add a photo of the oposite side of the room. Good luck!

Have you tried the wing chairs flanking the fireplace? And the front legs of the sofa should be on the rug if you can.

Thanks everyone. I just feel that the room is too beige and I think the off-white is overpowering. I'm not sure what colors to add as accents or how. I did move the chairs in front of the fireplace but it looked odd bc then a chair in front of the door openings looked odd. It's hard to tell in the picture but none of the walls are or openings are symmetrical. I'd liner complete the room but can't do window treatments etc until I know what's jappening for furniture clots etc. almost everyone who comes I to the room does not like the fabric on wing chairs and thinks it looks grandmotherly

I don't think the chairs are grandmotherly, just needing a pretty, new accent pillow to update them. Have you tried the sofa pulled a lot closer to the fireplace, then flanking the fireplace with the chairs? Looks like you might have a nice walk way behind the sofa that way. Then you could really doll up the window seat.

Maybe that shorter chair could be placed in the window bump-out with a table and lamp.

First move the sofa legs on the area rug. Put the demilune table up against the back of the sofa, not in front of the window. See if you like the bar cart on a larger wall, like between the doorway and the single chair, moving it so it is closer an don an angle to the fireplace. You need to think about areas rather than the entire room. Once you add a coffee table and pull in the sofa, you'll have a cozier area. For more impact, consider a lovely chandelier in the middle of the ceiling, so it can reflect from the mirror. I can't tell what color your walls are. In on picture they look pumpkin, in the other they look beige. That's where you should add some color, and carry it through with some paintings; pillow; and throws. Add some decorative colorful pottery pieces on your coffee table and you should have that WOW you're looking for.

I would move the wing chairs (I like the fabric) to the left of the fireplace. The other chair could either go where the wing chairs were or to the right of the fireplace. Move the bench that is in front of the window to use as a coffee table and move the sofa back into the window nook, if it will fit, or at least back. I think the current pillows are too casual for the formal look you have going.

Oh, what a nice room!! :) Seriously, it is. I agree about pulling the furniture into the rug. Your art is too pale....get something colorful. Yes, more lamps, pretty pillows, some end tables....that will pull it all together.

Thanks again. I just placed the furn in the room when I got the rug to see if I liked it. If I push the Sofa back more it definitely won't be on rug and if I out it in window it's just too far from the fireplace and it looks awkward. The walls are actually s light taupe and its grass cloth that looks like linen. Should I get a dark or light wood coffee table? What shape? The bench in window I bought at home goods simply so my dog would not jump on white sofa to look out window. :) it's mainly there to train him to go sit there instead. Ha! Any suggestions on type of pillows or artwork. I find both an insurmountable task

I keep looking at your room and then I flip thru the houzz 'off white living rooms' and came up with this room

I think this room has constrast that is missing in your room and some youthfullness that I think you might be seeking? Just my opinion. But consider that the cocktail table is dark wood and has matching portholes in the wall. You could replicate this with a dark cocktail table and a large round mirror framed simply in brown wood. Remove your ornate mirror to another part of the house where is can shine better. There is a lighter wood end table and a lighter wood doorway. You could have a matching end table in the lighter brown. The sofa is a pattern and that is similar to your patterned chairs. The ottoman is a deep mossy green/brown and vibes with the great green tree. The rug is more casual with a sisal weave which relaxes the room. There are some oil rubbed bronze pharmacy lamps that would casual down your wing chairs. And a fun picture that has all the color of the room and it matches the lamp on the table. This room has pairs, subtle, but something relates to something else and adds structure to the room. I think you should think about adding a mate for the things in the room to fill it up.

You could do a room arrangement with your chairs and sofa like the one above. But your arrangement is nice, just not done yet. Put white chair by fireplace and keep everything else as shown. Replace small round whitish end table with small modern glass gilt tiny table.Flip ottoman and iron table so table fills the window niche with those wonderful Freescia and that lamp and ottoman is against the wall. Put your small framed oils pictures into a grid pattern and hand about the ottoman at eye level, yours. The flowers in the vase could be changed to seasonal silk flowers as the year goes by and add a newness now and then.

2.5 times the width of windows for some linen curtains; a stripe would look nice with your colors in the fern pattern chairs and use ORB rods and rings.

Add a very dark wood cocktail table and the wood framed round mirror, more modern, over the fireplace. Put dark brown velvet pillows on your sofa to match the brown leather bench in the window. Find a Fiddle Fig Tree for your living room and bring in some green silk or sequin green pillows for your chairs or a pair of lamps a lively green. Your art work needs to feel more important in the room and maybe you could paint the re mat them to a deeper green or brown. This will probably make your art work stand out a bit and will bring out the leaf pattern in your chairs. A large rug the color of your mats in your large pictures would add some color to the room; you could have broadloom cut and bound to be one foot in all around your room. You want ALL of your seating pieces to be sitting completely on the sisal rug. Although your furniture placement is nice; just move the white chair to the corner of the fireplace facing sofa/chair corner. Find a little accent table in bling or gold and put by white chair. Find Pharmacy lamp in ORB to sit by chair. Put green sparkle kidney pillow in chair cashmere thow over arm. Place new contemporary straight end tables and lamps on either end of the sofa in the lighter wood as shown above; add lamps in color or bling.

These are just some ideas that I personally feel you need in your room. I am not a designer, but I like to study things and see how they relate. All I have suggested can be done in doses; large rug might be tricky, but then if so, try putting all your front furniture legs on the rug and see if it feels cozier. I go on and on, but there is so much in the process of design; God is in the details or so they say. Good luck. Try looking at navy blue, sea glass green and cream - still traditional, but crisp. Moving your furnishings in toward each other will reduce the formality here, as will a large ottoman coffee table. I think replacement of the window bench and all lamps- sconces included - with larger pieces is also due, and suggest a rug that extends just past the doorway, so there is an even border of floor around it. When you reconfigure, get all furnishings close enough to reach the coffee table - you may find the original flanked positioning more likeable with that in mind.

You where on the right track with adding black you just need a little bit more of it! First, pull the sofa in toward the fireplace so you can walk behind it. Put wings chairs so they are flanking fireplace. Eliminate the club chair. Add black floor lamp and coffee table as shown. Add console table. Get a longer more modern beach for alcove.

If you like something and it makes you smile when you enter the room, go for it. Just have fun! Don't try to please that unknown critic. Choose colors that you love and expand on it with detail.

Your room has a lovely FP and window as focal points. As I understand it, you are seeking ideas for furniture placement and making the room less formal, maybe transitional style. For furniture arrangement, what do you think of this...
Your sofa opposite the FP not too far away from it,
Your wing backs perpendicular to FP and side by side so they face the large opening into the room.
Seating should be within 8 ft of each other and about 14 inches from coffee table and all legs on rug, or at least front legs.
A round coffee table that is not too formal in style to get another shape in the room.
A sofa table behind your sofa, leaving enough room to walk between it and window.
Your large window seems to call for a built-in window seat/storage with dog-friendly microfiber cushion and lots of colorful pillows.
Garden seats are popular now and are a chance to add more color. Pole lamps instead of table lamps.
If there is room by large opening into room, a short chest in corner to left of FP with club chair.
Replace mirror with oversize painting, maybe resting on mantle and leaning against wall for less formal style.
Accessories that give your room less formal feel.
Instead of black, try dark green or charcoal gray or chocolate brown.
Add visual interest by mixing your accessory textures- shiny, matte, nubby, smooth, solid, airy, etc.

I'm in agreement with Nancy Ingram: I like black as an accent color. Have you considered a long, shallow table in front of the bay window? A lamp, a handsome accessory and a plant, perhaps, could look attractive. Moving the sofa toward the fireplace and adding a table sounds like a good start, too. Your existing artwork could work if you changed or painted the frames black (just an idea). Good luck!

I like the neutral sofa. Move it closer to rug. Add sofa table behind with bar items and a lamp. Add velvet pillows with coordinating ottoman and tray on top for drinks. Choose a large bold art piece. Remove the lone table from the corner. Modern lamps and shades will pop. If you want something more "loung-y" paint furniture legs and mirror frame a metallic or black. It is pretty now, just looks really formal which causes your guests to be less relaxed. Have fun!
