How to install exhaust vent for island cooktop?

I'm buying a condo with an island cooktop that has no overhead exhaust vent. My kitchen is open and about 15 feet across from balcony doors. I'm not on the top floor so can't drill a hole in the roof. How do I vent the exhaust to an outside wall?

am I mistaken or is that a Jenn Air downdraft range/cooktop. If so you have venting there, just not that obvious. While overhead is best, and you could still consider a recirculating model, that downdraft should work. Given you have the power & venting there, if it doesn't perform adequately, there are options with other cooktop/fan systems. EG: www.faberonline.com has a pop up vent that marries with a variety of cooktops. Check it out.

Correction, I guess it's about 25 ft from the balcony sliding doors (wall to ceiling windows.

I also need to move the microwave from over the sink (terrible design decision by the builder).

Short of barging in on the neighbors below to do a downdraft...you are stuck doing an exposed pipe vent running through your space. As for the microwave, we need a kitchen floor plan and some idea how much you are willing to tear out to gt this done to be of service. Any way you can get us that?

Although far from optimal, you could consider a recirculation down draft exhaust system. Jenn Air's can be converted to a duct free unit - http://jennair.com/appliances/details/JED4430WS. Thermador has a ductless model as well but I can seem to load the page at this time to provide you with a link - go to www.thermador.com. You will need to modify the island to incorporate either manufacturer's unit. I have used both models and they are surprisingly effective if installed properly.

Good idea, kitchensthatwork, ventless with a heavy filter is not a good option...but may be the only option for a clean install. We don't get to use them in NorCal and they slip off my radar. Given the island's location and apartment setting, they would most likely be grandfathered in to comply with Florida code (they are pretty similar to us here...)

You're right, Ellen, there is a downdraft, but I don't have any experience with how well it works and I cook a lot. Do any folks on the board know whether it is sufficient? Thanks for your suggestions, that's very helpful.

The downdraft is not as efficient as an overhead, but unless you are installing a commercial style cooktop, it should be adequate. Turn it on early and run it long and all should be good. Good eye Chrystal!
