I love this room but first thing I would do is move that tv away from that window...maybe hang it on the wall and take advantage of some of that height in the room. I would also use larger pieces of art and a larger area rug. Personally I might go for darker and more dramatic bedding and a large light fixture hanging from the overheight ceiling. I would move the chest from between the windows and place a comfy chair or better yet a dressing table there instead. It depends on the look you are going for....alot could be done with this space, I'm envious! Oh yeah, you have great light so I would definitely incorporate a larger size plant or two in the space to soften it up.

Thanks. This actually isn't my bedding, its a picture of the previous owner's stuff. We just bought this place and I'm trying to get ideas before moving in. I agree that they layout needs to be modified. I really want to maybe do a dark paint color--I think there's enough light for the room to handle it. But I want to keep it neutral (maybe a shade of grey) so I don't have to bring painters in every few years to paint this beast! My actual bedding is like charcoal and blue, I have an espresso stained West Elm headboard. So I've got a bit of drama happening with my current furniture, but I'm thinking this needs something big and dramatic. I was thinking about maybe some Wainscoating type paneling on the big wall to the height of the shorter wall, then painting the remainder of the ceiling.

Like Did you see the ideabook on extratall headboards? Boy do have the space for something like that! Or how about wallpapering the ceiling? saw that on some bedroom pictures here on Houzz very cool.

This is an incredible room to do some really dramatic decorating -- and still live with it. Pappering the ceiling is a great idea; not too many ops for that. Depends on whether you can find a pattern you can live with for 10 years. A large, dramatic geometric pattern to the wallpaper and the walls a color picked up from it. That headboard sounds like it would go with a deep gray/taupe. Or a blue-tone gray.

With silver. And big art. Or hang a really interesting sculpture over the bed. And hang a wonderful chandelier or unique ceiling fan. I never watch TV in bed, so I can't speak to that, but definitly unblock the window. Curtains in silk shantung (it has a shimmer and looks expensive even when it's faux) -- two tones of gray or, depending your accent color, copper, royal blue, antique gold.

I would move in and try your furniture out first...live with it and then make changes after you have made friends with your new house! If you are a West Elm type of girl I cannot see a papered ceiling...especially one that big!! I like your paint idea....Good luck.

This is a very interesting room to have a recessed, square patterned box-beamed ceiling as shown in this week's idea book, as it would bring texture and interest to this large room. The beams can be in wood to match the wooden floor of this room. The other idea to reduce the size of the room, apart from a darker ceiling, is a really tall headboard in a darker shade of blue to match the bedding. It will make the bed the focal point of this large room, without giving too much emphasis to the high ceiling. I would use elegant draperies for the windows and yes, move that chest and the TV away from the window. Two attractive bedside lamps, with an interesting base, either side of the bed might add to the overall interest.

Painting is always a good way to begin. Put a wide (maybe 3-4 inch) decorative wood border around the whole room at the height where the walls are straight up and down. Then paint the lower walls a color you wlll enjoy and the upper portion a darker color. By the time you add a few pictures and a tall potted plant and area rug you're in business.

Although I think the concept of a wallpapered ceiling could be interesting, it would be very expensive, both in terms of materials and time. That is one big ceiling! I am wondering how tall, and what material, your headboard is - that will drive some of your design decisions. Also, will your bed be on the same wall? If so, is the bed centered under the apex of the ceiling angle? It doesn't look lik this one is, but maybe it's just the photo. If it can be centered, I am thinking that a very large scale wall application could be very nice. What I have in mind are square wood panels, alternating the direction of the grain. I would make this large enough that it would extend a bit beyond your nightstands (you could even design floating tables which would extend out) This should go above the adjacent wall height - it's hard for me to say exactly how high without a real view of the room - but it might look good to end it in a point to match the wall. This could either be stained to match your headboard or another piece of major furniture in the room or the floor (is this oak or maple, and are you leaving it this color? I would like it best if it were the darker color I think). I think that I would paint the ceiling the darker shade of the room color and bring it down the tall wall. I would paint the others a couple of shades lighter. I think that with all of this dark color, however, you are going to need some white somewhere to lighten things up a little. Perhaps a dresser or side chair?

Thanks all for the tips. I'm planning to eventually get an upholstered headboard in an ivory/cream color. I want to paint the walls grey. I'm planning to either paint/get new white furniture-dressers, nightstands, etc. To balance the dark bedding and walls. I think wallpapering the ceiling is too extreme for me--i'm not sure i could live with it for 10 years. I really like the idea of box beams on the ceiling. I looked up the Craig Dennis idea and that's interesting too! Planning on blue curtains and rug to tie in some of the bedding. Thanks all!

Here are some suggestions for this lovely space:
I would paint the walls a nice charcoal grey, ceiling white. A very tall upholstered headboard would look great, as you suggest in cream, white or off-white And, I mean tall. You can do a search on this site for ideas. It can be tufted, or upholstered in a large" block" pattern in a nice textured fabric, such as linen; and anchored to the wall for support.
Simple, long side panels on the windows. Large artwork and accessories.


Large artwork on the walls. Large area rug. Move the t.v. And chest between the windows.
